Where does OS 8.6 hide the registation information?

I had a G3 develop some issues that required a clean install of the operating system (8.6).  The problem is, my old copy of Microsoft Office98 wants to run first launch, and I have no idea where that 22 year old CD got to.  I still have the previous system folder, but I have no idea where the preference or whatever holds that information is hiding.  Can anyone help me out?

Hmmm pure guesswork here as I don’t have 8.6 or Office98:  did you try inside Preferences in the System Folder?  Maybe look for a hidden file in the (root) System Folder or Preferences, using ResEdit or another tool that can show hidden files?  (If you find one that looks like a possibility, make it un-Invisible and copy it to your new System Folder, then try Office98...)

Thanks, I did try looking in the preferences folder and couldn't find anything that looked likely.  I have a copy of Norton Utilities that might do the trick for uncovering hidden files.  I remember using it when we bought a used G3 off of eBay, and I couldn't figure out why ASP was showing that the nearly empty hard drive was over half full.  Turns out the prior owner had a porn habit, and there were thousands of invisible files hidden on the hard drive. I had a good laugh, erased them, and life proceeded as usual.

It’s very likely in the System Folder somewhere. If it were in the application folder or in a resource in the application itself, it would get copied to any hard drive you moved the application onto, which MS wouldn’t have wanted (also, yours would still be working!). Happy hunting.

I found a website that told me what I could key in to use as the CD key.  It's working great now.  Thanks for the input!
