What exactly is this?

Sometimes I'll just look around at eBay auctions for fun, just to see how much money they go for.

In many auctions I see compacts that look like their plastic case has been re-melted into a larger area around the monitor, like with this Classic:

I wonder...could it possible be a glare screen of some sort on the front of the Classic? Or maybe some sort of touch screen?

Looks like a shadow to me... I think the Mac is lit pretty much from above, resulting in a shadow/highlight at the bottom of the bezel.

But I've been wrong before...

Could also be a military version of the mac where the screen have been covered with something that keeps others from reading what you are doing.

Most likely it is just a normal classic with a screen that keeps anyone not directly in front of it viewing what is being done (an acountants of HR computer).

It looks like a polarizing filter & anti-glare screen to me. These things used to be pretty common (especially among people with poor or degrading eyesight).

I concur with the anti-glare. People forget how difficult it was to read many early computer screens; low-contrast, low-brightness, and very high reflectivity. (Try looking at a modern glass-screen iMac or MacBook/Pro with the brightness on the minimum setting. Although even that's pretty bright comparatively.)

These things were *VERY* common in the '80s and early '90s. In fact, I was one of the few people who couldn't stand them; (the brightness wasn't all that great, so I didn't want to trade some of that brightness for more contrast,) and I recall how prevalent they were. Nearly everyone in an office had them.

Anti-glare screen. Had one on my SE in the day. Usually stuck on with strips of velcro either side of the display.
