Was given six Power Mac G5s from TV station but...

Is it wrong to want a side panel as well so I can hang it on the wall like guys do with hubcaps in their garage?

Don’t really have a place in mind to hang it, but… if I had extra panels laying around, that’s probably what I would do with one of them. Though getting one of these shipped to me, I feel scared that it wouldn’t make it to me without it getting bent/scratched/mangled in transit.

Its not wrong but you need one from each gen if youre gonna do that. From Quadra to Mac Pro.

I really don’t get the hate for the G5 within this group. All our old machines have limitations, geez!

Looking at the pics, these particular machines were all reliable models, they all run quietly, they look good, they can all run Classic, they can take large RAM complements, they can take sata drives, and in this instance, they are apparently going for free. The graphics cards are all pretty crappy, but there is a fix for that if you really need it fixed….

Everyone wants the fastest examples, of course, which generally means something liquid-cooled. Steer away from the liquid-cooled experiments, is my advice — unless you are a real zealot — as they are a true pita, especially at this stage of the game. The mid-range air-cooled machines have distinct advantages, in that they tend to be far less troublesome. With an air-cooled model like one of the dual 2.0s pictured, mind, a little routine maintenance goes a long way. Be sure in particular to install some new heatsink grease, and you’ll find that you’ve got a stable, powerful vintage machine (now ~20 years old, remember, which is roughly what the original Macintosh was when the G5s were introduced).

My favourite, I think, is the dual 2.3, from the penultimate iteration of the G5 towers. Even at 100% load, over protracted periods, my example is more or less silent. It’s also got a decent graphics card, so it can be used for period gaming. I have a quad G5 too, and a far better graphics card in it, but you’ve got to be dedicated to the care and feeding of the beast where those things are concerned. It’s also far from being silent under any significant load.

Most Apple software was written for single processor PPC use so I wonder if you get much use out of 4 cores on a G5. While Apple put a lot of effort into cooling G5's I bet a cheap PC heatsink with 4 heat pipes would probably been a better idea.

Anyway, I think a G5 with 2 single core or 1 dual core CPU with 4-8GB of RAM is one hell of a OSX multi-tasking machine. The G5 iMacs are ok for single tasks.

Well they're sold. A guy about 45 minutes away came and got it from ebay. He's got another one and is going to try to take all 7 and make as many working ones as he can so that works. At least they didnt go to the scrap yard!

Glad they ended up going intact somewhere useful, though I can’t help but feel it’s just passing the same problem to someone else.

If it was anywhere near me, I probably would have made a good 30 minute ride for them, though coming home with all 6 of them would more than likely get me into a good bit of trouble.
