Ubuntu Feisty Fawn? Hack-a-Mac w/X86 or GX?

I noticed this OS mentioned in one of Dr. Bunsen's posts, I thought ubuntu support was strictly x86! 8-o

How does this compare with the NetBook Remix a/o the current x86 release? :?:

That mention may just have saved one of my Q700's from suffering the indignity of a MicroATX brain transplant! Will "Feisty Fawn" run acceptably on a 6360 w/466 MHz Crescendo G3 upgrade a/o a 50 MHz mobo transplant?

If not, how about a 9600 MoBo? Dunno the spec, but I can probably find a reasonably priced 800 lb. Gorilla Class Processor Card upgrade for it.

Yet another projects begins to take form in the Black Hole that is my Research Triangle MacHackCenter! :-x

jt :I

p.s. Is this post in the proper forum? It's mainly about hacking hardware of the specified performance level, which platform and which box awaits the teeth of the Ryoba depends upon the Feisty Fawn specs.

p.p.s. I finally finished my first simple hack started after my recent hospitalization! I'll be right-sizing pics and learning how to post them "real soon now!" =8-/

"Feisty Fawn" just means it's the sixth major release of Ubuntu (A,B,C,D,E,F). Nothing to do with whether it's PPC or not. I think they're up to G or H by now. There are "unofficial" PPC builds for each release, so seek "Ubuntu PPC" and ye shall find.

I would go for the 9600 myself, as Linux loves RAM. 512MB or better is definitely preferred. Especially if you can match or better the CPU upgrade in the 6360. You best bet for video is probably whichever card the 9600 came with originally (IXMicro Twin Turbo 128?), or some variety of ATI.

It's simple really:

1) I just spent over a week wrasslin' with the XPHome3 recovery CD and never did get that P.O.S. to reinstall on HP_Mini.

2) The ubuntu NetBook Remix install went slicker'n snot on said X86 platform.

3) I'm a hardware Hacker . . . most decidedly NOT a Software Boffin!

4) Dealing with an "unsupported" port of a new-to-me OS to PPC w/a klugeware, patch on a hack on a . . . .

You get my drift . . . ;)

Either one of the two remaining "stock" members of the Q700 Triplets will be gettin' a Micro ATX Brain/PSU transplant, a coat of black paint and the ubuntu logo tattooed right over the fruitware icon . . . or just maybe, I'll do a Mini ATX HackAttack on the DEC Box that I've been hoarding under a desk up in the front bedroom/office/hack workstation . . . hrrm?

eensy . . . meansy . . . miny . . . }:)

I have just built my "HP Mini 2140" a month ago from scratch. I used the XP Pro SP2 install disk plus the drivers from the additional HP application disk. No real problems except having to buy a bootable USB CD-ROM drive. :)

WHY????? Wasn't it slow enough for you under XPHome3?

How does your 2140 compare to my 1030NR? I gave up on trying to make heads or tails out of HP's pathetic web site . . .

. . . and their Technical Disservice Dept. sets a new all time low in my book! > :(

It never ran XP Home, it came with XP Pro ( and Vista Basic ). It's now XP Pro SP3.
Huh? Are you talking about a 10.1" HP Mini NetBook or an HP NoteBook?

jt :?:

Edit: just googled it, looks like they thickened mine up to give it more of a "KBD" angle/internal elbow room, turned the bottom half silver and substituted a VGA port for the Docking Connector/VGA Cable adapter combo.

CRAPDOODLE! }:) That probably means they'll never come out with the promised, full-featured dock for the NetBook! > :(

Apparently the full title is "HP Mini 2140 Notebook PC ". It has an Atom, real hardisk, 2Gig RAM, BT, Wifi and a side salad.

It's not quite as dire as all that. "Unsupported" in this case just means it's not officially sponsored by Canonical, the main financial backers of Ubuntu. It's just a community driven recompile of the current source for PPC. It's fairly enthusiatically community supported, like other *nix distros.

My comments about video cards shouldn't discourage you. If the card is an OEM install on *any* supported Mac, then it should be recognised by the installer magic. As for the G4 upgrade, I would hazard a 95% guess that you'll have no problems there either, seeing as they are such a popular upgrade amongst the performance nuts who do this kind of thing *ahem*. A quick google should confirm that.

As the range of add-on hardware for Macs is so much smaller than for PCs, drivers should be no problem - they're pretty much all there on the disk, integrated from one of the many PPC unixen. My guess is a 9600/G4 with a zippier video card would actually be one of the *most* common configurations for PPC Linux. Unless you're sporting some really weird, obscure hardware, I would say - suck it and see!

My experience with it has pretty much been - you stick it in the CD drive, click install, follow the prompts (if any), and you're in business. Besides, you can always run it off the CD to check it out, then install later.

Looked pretty cool, but probably a little bit heavier than my NetBook.

Looks like a maybe it's got a six-cell bat-pack?

What does it weigh w/battery installed?

Gawd, how I hate Googling for info on products these days, the only thing worse than the first two pages of google search hits is HP's web site!

Thanks for the link, it's been snagged and I'll peruse it offline!

As far as "feisty fawn" or the "jaunty whatever" that alk is trying to get up and running over on 'fritter, I think I'll stick with the "standard" X86 distro.

What gets hacked and how, depends upon form factor considerationss, $ worries, and whatever whim strikes me when it's time to start hackin' another box. I haven't built or upgraded an X86 since the rug-rat started high school . . . and he'll be 24 this year!

It may also depend upon how much power I'd need to run my CammJet Plotter. I'll bet there are drivers for it out there in the X86 world of Linux that'll do full color inkjet plotting right out of the GIMP. If so, the least expensive Micro ATX MoBo that's up to the task, hacked into one of the Q700 triplets, would be a match made in heaven!

That's IF Murphy and the form factor gods don't bollix the deal! ;)

I'm still kicking myself I didn't bid for the CAMMjet I sold for work last year. /ouch /ouch /ouch
Ouch! But if you wanna REALLY feel bad, just ask me how much mine cost!

Here's an article I found through LEM which may be of interest:How Does Ubuntu 9.04 Measure Up to Mac OS X?
Thanks for the link, it was an interesting comparison, but entirely moot, I'm livin' in an OS 9.2.2 world and I am NOT paying for any upgrades of my dozens of licensed apps just to have them run on X!

::)

I think I'm going open source from here on out! The idiot in the jeans & designer black T-shirts can kiss my ( | ) }:)

. . . and Warnock at Adobe can line up right behind him! I've got licensed copies of, and bought almost every upgrade for, just about every OTHER graphics offering from those jerks and they've NEVER offered ANY incentive (discount) on PhotoSchlock to their loyal customer base! Whatta' bunch of pikers!

mode> ;)

. . . on the other hand, the woz ROCKS! AND Dances with gusto, if not optimum level aptitude!

Well, I downloaded Ubuntu from the link provided by macgeek417 (a 4 hour process at 70KB) and put the iso image on an empty HD on the G$ MDD. Upon double clicking the image I get "the disk image may be damaged, opening it may cause damage to your system". What?? I know nothing about Linux so any thoughts would be most welcome. I'm somewhat loathe to risk the Tiger load currently running the G4.

Stand up, step away from the computer and seriously consider what you are doing.

If you have never touched Linux before then never ever ever ever install it on a machine with another OS you value.

If you want to investigate Linux put it on another machine or remove the existing harddisk from your G4.

Okay, you've convinced me! Burning the iso image to disk now and won't attempt to install without disconnecting the other HD's on the G4. Hmmm. Wonder if it will work in a 9500/G4?
