Tired of waiting for the boot selection menu?

Everyone else probably already knew, but if you have a machine that you like using the boot menu for selecting which drive to start from (holding option on machines with a new world ROM), you can make the scan finish faster! As long as you're not planning to netboot, you can turn off the scan of the network and not have to sit waiting for ages.

This is handy if...
  • You're lazy and have two or more OSes installed on a machine
  • You have a machine that Apple disabled OS9 boot selecting in Startup disks (Mac Mini, some eMacs, some PowerBook G4, etc.)

To do this, you want to load up OpenFirmware (hold down Cmd+Opt+O+F during startup) and then enter the following :
Code:
setenv skip-netboot? true
Followed by enter. You probably then want to type "bye" (and enter) to continue booting.

Scrub that - timed it on my Pismo and it took just as long.

Ah well. Can't always believe what you read on the internet.
