Thinking Of "Mystifying" My Color Classic

Hi,

I'm thinking of doing a "Mystic" conversion, and I have an extra Performa 575 board available, so I'm wondering if anybody knows the modification that needs doing, and if it will still work in a Performa 575 after it's been modified.

Thanks!

Back in the day to get the CC to accept the minimum 640x480@66 display of the 575 required literal hacking at your analog board. I hear rumors now though that MacOS 8.1 will just work with the 575 + unmolested CC-AB set up.

I may be misunderstanding though.

I tried that with a stock LC575 LB, /w Mac OS 8.1, It didn't work, I think the LC575 board still has to be moded, I think Using MacOS 8.1 Just can keep you from having to hack up the Video Circuit in the CC. Because 8.1 will allow that stock CC resolution.

From colorclassicfaq:

I'm a klutz with a soldering iron. Can't I do something in software instead?

Yes. While I personally find doing the VGA modification to get 640x480 resolution much more useful, you can do some ResEdit hacking to avoid the issue of soldering entirely. Obviously, you won't get higher resolution, but you can use a 57x board without any modifications to the board or CC's hardware. Special thanks goes out to the pickle for simplifying and documenting this hack and to MISUTHiKU for providing the gestalt ID and boot process information.

Machine Gestalt ID Boot Process

Colo(u)r Classic 49 18

57x with 640x480 92 10

57x without 640x480 99 10

Gestalt ID info is from the KBase Archive article 9095.

Whenever you use ResEdit, always work on a copy of the file. This prevents you from accidentally causing permanent damage to a file that might otherwise require re-installation to fix.

If you're using 7.5.x, 7.6.x, or 8.x:

Make a copy of the System file and open the copy in ResEdit.

Download the pickle's TMPL file for ResEdit to edit the 'gusd' resources.

Unstuff this file and transfer it over to the system where you're doing the editing.

Open this file with ResEdit too, so you have both the copy of the System and the TMPL file open. You do not need to do anything with the TMPL other than open it, although you can copy the TMPL resource found in the file into either the ResEdit Preferences file or a copy of the ResEdit application itself if you want to avoid this step in the future.

Open up the 'gusd' resources in the duplicate System file and find the gestalt ID corresponding to the 57x without 640x480 (ID number 99).

Change the boot process — and ONLY the boot process — from 21 (the boot process for a 58x) to 10 (the boot process for a 57x) according to the table above. Leave the gestalt ID at 99 (unchanged), or your editing won't have any effect.

Save your changes.

Remove the old (un-edited) version of the System from the System Folder, but don't trash it just yet.

Re-name the edited version to "System" and make sure it's in the System Folder.

Open and close the System Folder once to make sure it's "blessed," and you're done.

If you're using System 7.1:

Get Enabler 065 v1.1 (Where do I get it?) and make a copy.

Get the pickle's 'gbly' template.

Move the TMPL file to the machine you're doing the editing on and open it.

Open the Enabler and then open the 'gbly' resources.

Click on the number 6, at the end of the gestalt ID list.

Go to Resource -> Insert New Field(s).

In the blank box that appears, type the number 93. Save your changes.

Make sure the edited Enabler is in your System Folder and is the only Enabler file present, and you're done.

Yeah, I think I should probably use the software method, at least at first, until maybe I find a bare board I can dedicate to this purpose.

Thank you all for the input!

I'll still definitely need a recap, though!

Please update if you are successful, I would like to do the same thing, but would like to avoid hacking either the CC or the board.

In addition, a full 7.5.3/7.5.5 install, which is available from Apple's web site anyway, should run unmodified on both a color classic board and a 575 board.

The ResEdit hack works well, leaves everything intact, and I doubt that the hardware-hacked 640x480 on a CC screen would be readable, anyway. Go the Resedit route.

Easily done and teaches you something about the system software. Resedit also is a very useful tool.

Hi,

OK, I'll do the ResEdit method. It's completely reversible and there's no risk of damaging the hardware (which I like).

I'll get to it sometime soon; my Color Classic is in storage right now (yet I have the logic board at home... )

In the meantime, I guess I could make the modification on a true 575 and see what happens (I have not one, but two of them here, although I am uncertain of the working condition of the second).
