The Massive Mac Hoard in Illinois! I can get it

I'm one of those people with more time than money.

So getting a cheap unit, even a POTENTIALLY smelly one is great for me.  I have no issues spending an evening delicately washing every part and making it all nice and pretty.  I had an IBM thinkpad 730 for a while (large book sized 486 tablet).  got it practically for free.  That thing stank to high heaven.  Literally could smell it anywhere in my house.

Afternoon of cleaning, could not smell a thing afterwards.  Made a tidy profit.  You would be amazed how some quality dish soap and scalding HOT water make a huge difference.

That is what I see here.  If the seller will negotiate on price, someone can make some good money here if they are willing to spend some time to clean some of these units.  Factoring in the smoke, $5000 is WAY overpriced.

I'm interested in the 128K with "Macintosh 128K" badge (ie. second-generation 128K) if we can put together a pool of people buying.

I mean, I'd love that Kaypro 10 but there's no way I can afford it so I'd have to pass it on to someone else.

Further update from last evening's phone call with the seller:

I called the seller and we spent about 25 minutes or so discussing this collection of Macs and other computers, and the plan that I had in mind to distribute the computers that we here at 68kmla were interested in. He has read this topic and will be following it from time to time.

Of course at first he preferred that I or someone pay $4500 dollars and take all of it away, but as we continued talking, I think he will be agreeable to me coming in with some agreeable amount of money and taking away only the machines that we are interested in, leaving him with cash in hand NOW and a much smaller pile to dispose of in future. I think he would prefer to deal with only one person to keep things simple.

Regarding the cigarette smoke, he said that it is worst when the machines are powered on and the internal fan is running, which blows out the smell. Otherwise, according to what he said, the smell is not overpowering to him when he's merely in the room. But of course if he puts his nose right up to one of the computers, it's noticeable. Not all machines got the same amount of smoke exposure.

I will be planning a time either this weekend or early next week to stop by and personally evaluate these machines and do a very quick inventory of what is here and what appears to be working (at any stage).

Please hold off on any more requests until I report back next week!

I will make a report next week with my observations and findings. There may be things here that you didn't know that you want. Or there may be things that you thought you wanted, but actually you don't. All based on what I report back.

I will do my best to power up and do a quick bootup test of as many machines as I can, as well as make an inventory of what's here.

Again, please hold off on any more requests until I report back next week! (Because you may end up changing your mind on things)

Latest updates on these Macs...

I stopped over in Decatur earlier this week and took 2 hours to go through just about all these computers, power them on and see if they boot or not.

There's good news and there's bad news.

I will get my report typed up, as soon as I can, on what's the status of these machines.

So hold tight until then! :)
