Target Disk Mode Question (iBook OS loading)

I have hit a snag in trying to get one of my iBook 500s loaded with 10.4. I am trying to do target disk mode from a G4 iBook to the recipient G3 500 iBook. I can put the host 1.33 into target disk mode, but it won't keep the OS install disk in the optical drive. If the dvd is in the drive on startup, it spits it out. If started first in target disk mode, then insert disk, it reads it, and spits it out. When starting normally on the 1.33, it does see and open the DVD, so it's not that the drive's not working. What now? The 500 just isn't much use to me running 10.2.8 or OS 9...

Only other thing I can try at home is trying to use a Pismo as the host unit, then seeing if I can get the DVD to mount?

Can you simply reverse things, IE, put the G3 into target disk mode, boot the G4 off the install disk, and select the G3's hard disk as the install target? Last time I checked that worked.

Thanks, G. Solved it by creating a bootable flash drive and that worked well. Your solution would probably have worked too. (I need to also test my firewire cable, it may be defective.)
