Tangerine iBook!

Thanks to eBay, I'm now the very proud owner of a tangerine clamshell iBook. It came with all of its original packaging and install CDs so I had my own exciting little unboxing.

I already swapped out the original 3.2GB hard disk for a 20GB. It has 288MB of RAM. I'd love to add a 512MB DIMM for it but the cost is a bit prohibitive.

Since the 20GB drive was previously in my dual USB iBook, I didn't have to do the format/install from scratch game. I'm booting between OS 9 and Tiger but I'm debating going back down to Panther. The only downside of that is that .Mac/MobileMe support is non-existent on pre-Tiger systems so I'll lose my calendar/contact/Safari bookmark syncing. I suppose there's always the web interface but I like integration too much.

I always wanted one of them and now I have it. |)

Nice, I have always wanted one of the brighter colors. I got my 2 from my school, Blueberry and Graphite. Clamshell's are the coolest design ever.

If I wasn't so about the color orange, I'd have gone with a Keylime 'Book just because it would be nice to have FireWire. It's so sad there's no chance in hell Apple will never make anything like them again. :'(

I've always been a quiet fan of the original iBooks.

While I wouldn't mind owning one because I've always wanted too I have no idea what I would do with it other than have it sit around my house with the other computers I don't use.

I've been semi-forcing myself to use it daily just because I don't want to feel like I bought it for it to collect dust. It really is a nice little machine. A friend of mine actually has a few mounted on the wall in his house! (not sure how, as I haven't seen them in person, but pretty amusing IMHO)

I bought a graphite clamshell (466 MHz with 312MB of RAM, DVD, Firewire) off eBay two weeks ago for $120 (shipping included). I bought it solely for its unique shape/design. I put it on the floor in my living room as decoration only - with the shell half open and standing on the open shell, so the big apple logo is right in your face. it looks really cool.

I use VNC remotely control it to have it play internet radio at times. Even though it has a mono speaker, it actually is every acceptable to my ears.

It doesn't look like a computer, and that's why I wanted it.

Wow, I don't know if I would have spent the extra $$ on a well equipped 466MHz model if you're not planning on using it.

Congrats on the iBook! I've always wanted to get one of those myself.
Me too. Back when they were first announced, I really wanted one of the Tangerine ones and almost had my wife talked into it (though she would probably have insisted on Bondi/Blueberry), but she got put off by the early reviews' comments about memory and hard disk size.

I still want one, though... just not sure what I'd actually *do* with it...

Great colour

The earlier ones look great with the metal shielding removed - I have several Clamshells including 2 x Key Lime

Hi there

A few things:

iSight requirements are a minimum of 500MHz G4 - there is an Open Firmware trick to fool the iSight into running on an iBook clamshell under Mac OS X though:

1. Reboot your Mac and hold down the Cmd-Opt-O-F keys until you get a white screen with black text. This is the Open Firmware prompt.

2. Type the following lines exactly as shown below into the Open Firmware prompt. Be mindful of capitalization, spaces, zeros, etc. If the command is properly typed and understood, Open Firmware will display "ok" at the end of each line after you hit "return". What these lines do is set the CPU speed reported by Open Firmware to OS X as a 500 MHz G4 processor system.

For single CPUs, use the following two lines:

dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0

d# 500000000 encode-int

3. This CPU setting is only in effect until the Mac reboots.

ALSO

• iSight performance in iChat will be poor though but it also works as a video camera in iMovie under Mac OS X and performs slightly better

• If you intend to replace the HDD, go for the larger of the two you mentioned if you are going to fit the drive yourself. There is a fair amount of dismantling to fit the HDD

• Why do you need an inverter? Is the LCD dim or totally blank? - Occasionally on eBay you can get a complete display assembly which is easier to fit

• Mac OS X 10.3 is better suited for a Clamshell (use Firefox instead of Safari for better compatibility on many websites). This assumes you are using a 466MHz clamshell

• Avoid Office 2008 and stick with 2004 or use AppleWorks 5/6 which runs on Mac OS 9 too!

• iPhoto '05 is the latest version from iLife that will run on a Clamshell due to the screen resolution

• In my experience, the best browser for OS 9/Clamshell is Netscape 7.0.2 (often the L/H side of websites will be cropped) - others will say iCab but it's slow and crashes

• Original Airport cards may not be able to join some wireless networks that use a WPA Personal password

• Replacement optical drives require modding if you want to keep the existing coloured bezel (the CD/DVD bezels are not interchangeable and only fit the original drive)

Enjoy your Clamshell

I'd love to add a 512MB DIMM for it but the cost is a bit prohibitive.
Check out macsales.com. Their prices are usually pretty good. I went there after scouring ebay and did better, even with shipping to where I am. And they'll guarantee it to work with your Mac.

As noted, the clamshells are a PITA to dismantle, so try to do all your upgrades in one go.

A friend of mine actually has a few mounted on the wall in his house! (not sure how
Probably hanging by the handle :D

As long as the HDD (or something else) doesn't go, I'll hopefully never have to tear it completely down again.

Well that would be the obvious method.
