System 7 not booting on SE/30

So, I can't get any version of System 7 to boot on this machine, which is frustrating. I have tried 7.0.1, 7.1, 7.5, none of them boot. Of course, System 6.0.8 works perfectly (go figure!). Now, this problem was present before my recap, but I thought that recapping and cleaning my logic board might make it go away, it didn't :-/ (I'm hearing words in my head I don't want to hear "Run a patch wire!").

The other thing is my serial chip, before my recap every time I wanted to do something with the SCC the mac would lock up and freeze, now, I haven't been able to test it after my recap, but I think that issue may have been fixed by recapping it. Not totally sure though

Yes, I do get a nice boot chime now, as well as all the other sound that didn't work before. I don't feel that my recap job created any more problems, as these problems were present BEFORE I recapped. (Also, I'm fairly confident in my soldering skills too)

Thanks

I have a similar problem with SE/30 after caps spillage. After a lot of work managed to revive the video, but I can not get any sound.

If there's any sound in the app (or when I try System sounds) it freezes! The same with loading the System 6.x. I have schematics if you want.

I would love the schematics, send them my way! :)
My sound works fine, no problems with sound here.

Obviously like always make sure you've got enough memory!
I have too much memory ;) ! I have 68MB!!
(got to try with just 4MB installed now, maybe it will make a difference?! But also thinking it wont make a difference...)

That's an odd problem.  My first inclination is to think it has something to do with boot media.  What are you booting FROM?  Floppies?  Is the sys6 disk 800k and all the sys7 disks 1.4M?  If so can you read the sys7 disks at all on that machine?  Can you boot another machine from the same media so you KNOW it is good? You know, the usual questions...

Should have mentioned in my OP:

  • The System 6 and System 7 disks are all 1.44MB
  • I have tried booting from both HDD and floppy
  • All of the disks work fine in my SE FDHD.
ya, thanks for running through "the usual questions" I did narrow all of that out though...

Is there some sort of debug version of the system, that I can monitor the boot progress from a serial console (attached to the serial port)? It seems to get hung up at a specific part

Oh, and in regards to what I said above about them all working in my SE FDHD, all of the media is Universal "for any Macintosh".

You forgot to mention what the actual error is? And if you cant communicate with the SCC its because "run a patch wire".

Its common for the address/data bus to break between the SCSI and SCC.

I will have to get an old version of ClarisWorks that is compatible with System 6 so I can test the SCC functionality.

I don't ever get an actual error code...

ok, then what does it do...

Lock up at the menu bar before it reaches desktop?

System 7 queries the SCC after/during boot, and before it reaches the desktop.

Yup, it does lock up before reaching the desktop, menu bar has no labels in it, and the mouse can still be moved. Ill double check the area between the 53C80 and the SCC tomorrow. Looks like I will be spending some quality time with the multimeter and the schematics.

Is it possible it just needs a good clean with white vinegar? I used 99% Isopropyl to clean during my recap, maybe that wasn't enough?

So I just did a cleaning with white vinegar and toothbrush, followed by a rinse of 99% IPA. It's currently drying right now.

Yep, you have broken traces at the SCC. Thats your issue.

There are 3 caps next to the main molex plug, they leak obviously, and the Vias right there break which is what knocks out the SCC. Sometimes it will knock out the SCSI and the sound.

SCSI and sound is working thankfully.

Approximately how many patch wires do you think I will have to run? Also, if there are busted vias, that means that some inter board connects are missing :-/ , any suggestions for how to route a patch wire from one side of the board to the other?

Also, possibly related, my hard drive will startup, and them after the RAM check is completely will spin down, and then the blinking floppy :?: shows up, and then my HDD wil spin up and then whatever is on it will boot...

What pages do I need from the SE/30 schematics (as published by Apple; not the BOMARC ones), I am thinking both parts of page 6, and page 7.

P.S. I have the BOMARC ones too those might be better for this?

So yeah, the vinegar and 99% isopropyl alcohol clean didn't help at all, time to break out the multimeter, but tomorrow..

Where should I start buzzing first in the schematic?

So I printed out the page from the BOMARC schematics, I have a physical copy now; YAY! Anyway, I was wondering, is there any good way to keep track of what all I should check?
