Strange "Space Ship" Sound Coming from LC III Speaker

I have read the other threads about strange sounds coming from an LC, but this one seems a bit different.

Here's a video:

I think this is related to the reason why it will not boot. The hard drive seems fine. In fact, it was booting last night, and then when I tried it this morning, this strange sound started happening, and it doesn't appear to even try to access the hard disk. (I opened the hard disk to see if anything funny was going on -- it is perfectly clean.)

Any idea what would cause this strange sound to come out of the speaker?

This really frustrates me because the computer was working so beautifully last night, I played Sim City 2000 for two hours.

It might be a silly question but... why is there no lid on your hard drive? Does it still make the sound when that drive is completely removed?

luckybob, the sound is definitely coming from the speaker, not the hard drive. I opened the hard drive to check if the sound was coming from there. (It is not.) It's closed now :)

uniserver, do I need to replace all of the capacitors or a specific one(s)?

To clarify, disconnect the speaker and see if any whining occurs around the power supply, just to rule that out. But I agree in that it's probably the sealed capacitors on the motherboard itself that need replacing. You might be able to replace just the leaking/bulging caps and get away with it, but ideally you will want to replace all the capacitors on the board.

Also wondering if that hard disk have a lid? :p Coz it's going to last about ten seconds as soon as dust gets in!

I don't wonder at all, that drive is as good as dead now. I mean its "technically" possible to be lucky enough that the internal filer takes care of the load of dust and dirt, but if you are THAT lucky you should be out playing the lotto, not opening drives.

well i have an Lc-1 lc-2 lc-3 the 2 and 3 are doing what yours is doing, i have a classic 1 and Classic 2 that have no sound,

if you were cheap you could just replace the ones for the sound, but because you already have your iron warmed up,

you should just do them all. :)

To clarify: the lid was BRIEFLY off the hard drive and is back on. The hard drive is fine. I booted from it and used it since then. I knew I would catch hell for the hard drive being open!

Anyway, thanks for all the responses and the info.

I will swap out all of the capacitors for new ones. Should be a fun project.

(And I promise to take better care of my hard drives from now on.)

If you can't feel like you're up to that, trag will recap your mobo.

Also don't run HDs without the cover, other Seagate and WD will come to your house, stuff you full of caviar until you burst, and put you in a tank full of barracudas. Don't do it. (MFM hard drives can though - those were apparently tough motherfriggers)
