Still unable to connect Mystic Color Classic to internet

Hi Folks,

A few weeks ago, before my Color Classic was Mystical, I started a post at viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10285 trying to get it on the internet. Now that the system specifications and error messages have changed, I'm starting a new thread to try and troubleshoot why I can't make a connection. Right now I'm using the MacTCP control pannel and MacWWW browser over a Fallaron EtherMac LC card that came with my 575 logic board to connect to a Linksys Wireless/Wired router. I have followed the online instructions that I was pointed to so that Mac TCP is setup manually with the IPs and everything. Right now MacWWW can't find any websites, and for whatever reason I can't get any version of a Ping program to stuffit expand so I feel very stuck. Any thoughts?

Also - before my CC couldn't switch the Appletalk to Ethertalk, but now it can. I installed the Apple Network installers v1.5, which is where I got my PDS card driver.

Gear:

Mystic CC:

LC575 Motherboard

System 7.1 (could be a little messy; have not re-installed since owner installed in 1995 and was using a dial-up modem it looks like)

12mb RAM *hopefully soon to be 132mb*

80mb Hard Disk

Fallaron Ethermac LC PDS cardh

Internet:

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless/Wired router with RJ45 cable connecting CC to Router

Router is plugged into RCN Cable modem via Ethernet

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I've had some serious problems getting MacTCP to work with my Linksys WRT54GL router. Turns out those Linksys routers (and probably certain other brands as well) perform some kind of reordering of packet priority to improve the quality of service, and MacTCP doesn't like that. I could get MacTCP Ping to work, but anything more complicated than that (Fetch, MacWeb, Mosaic, whatever) just wouldn't work.

There are two solutions:

1) Use OpenTransport instead of MacTCP. That'll work perfectly with a 12 MB Color Classic and System 7.1, even if it is a bit of a memory hog. You'll also have the added advantage of DHCP support, so you don't have to manually set your IP address.

2) Patch MacTCP to the unofficial version 2.1, as found here. That fixed the Linksys incompatibility for me, and works great on my 4 MB Classic.

Of course I cannot guarantee that you're having the same problem, but it's worth a try at least.

I second Nico's suggestion to use Open Transport - while it is a bit of a memory hog as he said, it is much, much, much, much easier to configure than MacTCP, and supports DHCP, which MacTCP does not. IMHO MacTCP is only really good when you have to use it, for example under System 6.

Go with 1.1.2, the files called:

- OT_1.1.2-1of4.sea.bin

- OT_1.1.2-2of4.sea.bin

- OT_1.1.2-3of4.sea.bin

- OT_1.1.2-4of4.sea.bin

Stupidly enough, OpenTransport 1.1.2 is only available as an update. This means you have to install OT 1.1.1 first, and then upgrade to 1.1.2, which is a bit of a bore. Having said that, OT 1.1.1 should work fine on its own and will probably suit your needs. You need to upgrade to 1.1.2 only in some special cases, for instance if you want to route a TCP/IP connection over Localtalk using MacIP.

OT 1.1.1 is contained in the following files:

OT_1.1.1-1of4.sea.bin

OT_1.1.1-2of4.sea.bin

OT_1.1.1-3of4.sea.bin

OT_1.1.1-4of4.sea.bin

Good News: 128mb stick worked; Color Classic now reports 135mb of built-in memory. I have virtual memory off. Any use for RAM disk now?

Bad news: Gah! Now that I have OT 1.1.1 installed, when I open TCP/IP it says that the previously selected ethertalk is not available, so its reverting to appletalk. In the Appletalk control panel, only the modem port and printer ports are options. Before, with my original CC logic board, I had similar issues with the CC not being able to switch Appltalk to Ethertalk, but not since the mystic switch. I just tried to use Network Installers 1.5 to put the Apple Ethernet LC driver back but it reports that the driver is already there, which it clear is upon manual inspection. ANy ideas!?

You may need special drivers for that Farallon card - a lot of third party ethernet cards need their own drivers under System 7, rather than the drivers that Apple provides.
