So, magnets work

I decided to fix some broken cd , floppy bezels from q800, powermac 8500 etc. since there is already metal frame there, i used an apple tactic and used magnets to hold bezels on. Dont have to worry about breaking or broken plastics now

That is very slick actually, surprised nobody has thought of that before. Nice fix!

Well, maybe delete this thread for now. Magnets may be an issue. Let me do some checking. Would hate to see anyone ruining floppies

I think the concern is not one based in complete fact. My IIci has a HDD directly above the floppy drive, like we are talking 1/2" away and you will never find an issue between the two.

I saw a video on the subject a while ago and the person found that you would need the magnets to literally sit directly on the floppy for a few minutes but that is absurd. Here is the video:

Not saying I am an expert here but those tiny magnets should have zero effect on a floppy unless you place them directly on the floppy for an extended period of time.

Hope this helps!

There were many studies done, and even a great story in the MacSecrets books, about insanely high strength magnetic fields never hurting a floppy.

No, not at all. The idea is good. It's just something to bear in mind.
As someone with 2x PM 8110s, this plan does appeal to me.
My plan is to just hoard bezels for them. I might currently have the largest stash of bezels for that style, although someone is welcome to challenge my self appointed title.

Well, it is nice to have the stash:) but the problem is how easy the plastic breaks trying to put them on a machine, or taking them off:(

Well, good news. I left a floppy just sitting in the floppy waiting to be pushed in for 24 hours. I booted the 8500 and tried the floppy, no issues, works fine. So maybe magnets are ok there. Still take this at your own risk, but seems to work ok. If anyone tries this, use some test floppies to confirm. Maybe push magnets closer to edge of bezel

I like to shave the little bit they snap over on the machine down a little so the tab doesn't have to flex as much when putting them on. And I never take them off once they are on.

I appreciate the effort in trying to find out if any damage would ensue. Glad your fix seems to be a viable one!!

Thanks!

true, they are just so fragile now..would rather have the original clips, but anything is better than a missing bezel :p

I just saw this - Brilliant, and very cool.
Other than the fact that my brain (and I don't know why!) immediately went to the ICP song line about '...Magnets how do they work?'
I'm still laughing...

I was literally half way into typing out an ICP joke when I noticed you already beat me to it.

I was going to write, "Insane Clown Possy disapproves of your methods."
