So i have a scsi2sd ver 5.1 and im just trying to get my classic II to boot up. i have been following the guide at http://www.savagetaylor.com/2018/05/28/setting-up-your-vintage-classic-68k-macintosh-creating-your-own-boot-able-disk-image/#comment-9111 (more info about the issue in the comments section of that page I am Michael) but no matter what i try when i turn on the mac i just get the disk icon with a "?". a brief overview (more info in that comment section) I set up the sd card with scsi2sd util (termination is set to off as it is internal), flash the OS to the card using balenaEtcher, both flash with no issue. put it in to the adapter and turn the mac on but no joy. I had read in a few places that the power to the board should have the 12v line cut so i had done that to the molex adapter but i also tried unplugging that and powering from usb but no change. with both power sources the led on the board will light up once when the machine is turned on but then goes out which is different when i hook it up to the pc, there it will flash every few seconds. not sure if that matters but figured i would mention it.

i just thought of something, i got this classic ii about a year ago and after a recap it came on and was doing the same thing it is now, just a icon with a ? looking for a disk. but at that time it had a internal 40mb hard drive that was spinning up. it didnt sound very good and when i got that icon i assumed that the drive was dead after all it had gone though the post so maybe it had a rough ride. the seller couldnt tell me if it had been working before because it needed to be re capped before it would power on. but now that im having this issue im wondering, do you think it could be the cable from the drive to the logic board? or perhaps an issue with the socket?
i have now also tried setting it up as a external drive by adding a DB25 socket to it and then powering it via usb but still no luck so i am assuming it something with the way i have it set up in software.
here what i have done:
1. plug in scsi2sd with usb to pc and open scsi2sd-utl.exe
2. updated firmware to 4.8.04
3. i format my sd card (4gb) and then put it into scsi2sd board
4. in the util window - gen settings tab i unchecked eanable scsi terminator, scsi host speed is set to normal, start up delay set to 0, scsi selection delay set to 255, no other options are checked
5. device 1 tab - enable scsi target is checked, scsi id set to 0, device type set to hard drive, quirks mode set to none, sd card start sector set to 0, sector size set to 512, sector count set to 4194303, device size set to 2gb, vendor set to codesrc, product id set to scsi2sd, revision is 4.2 serial number is 1234567812345678
6. no other device is enabled at the moment so i save to device.
7. i downloaded os 6.0.8 from http://www.savagetaylor.com/ using the 2gb version and unzip.
8. i test to make sure it will boot in emulator softmac, no issues.
9. i remove my sd card from the scsi2sd board and put it into a usb to sd card reader and plug it in to my computer.
10. using balenaetcher i flash the os to the usb/sd drive, no issues.
11. take sd card out of usb adapter and put back into scsi2sd board connect the internal ribbon cable so that the mac and scsi2sd board are connected and plug in the molex adapter from old internal HD to the scsi2sd molex adapter. (note: the 12v line was cut on my adapter so the molex now only has 5v and two grounds going to the board)
12. turn on the classic the scsi2sd's led indicator flashes once then there is no other activity the mac continues to boot and eventually i am left with a disk ? icon.
one other note is that i have also tried unplugging the molex and using power from a usb instead with no change.
looking for any ideas to try as i am losing hope.

You did turn termination back on while it was connected externally, right?
Everything you’ve done sounds correct to me, so I’d continue swapping things out until you can isolate the problem. You don’t have the ability to boot from floppy or connect the SCSI2SD to another computer?
You might try using a different SD card or a smaller image. I have this vague memory of seeing the “blink once” behavior when the disk wasn’t initialized or bootable, but I doubt it’s the only thing that causes that behavior.

yes externally connected termination was turned back on and i have also tried with a 16gb sd card i will try the smaller img to see if that works. the only other thing is the battery on the macs board has been removed. and i have noticed some issues when using the external scsi port. first i had issues when i tried a zip drive the mac was turning on just fine then i attached the zip drive and there was problems booting. the screen seemed dim then after a few reboots it i got jail bars on the screen. i tried letting it sit with the external scsi unplugged but it just wouldnt come back so i soaked the logic board and got back to the point where it boots up. when i tried to use the scsi2sd as external the first time i turned it on there was no tone and nothing on the screen. a reboot came up fine. not sure whats going on with that.
unfortunately i do not have any floppies to try and no way to make any. also this is my only older mac only other mac i have is from 2013.

If there were previously problems using the machine with SCSI devices, that may indicate a problem with the computer rather than the SCSI2SD setup. I don’t have experience diagnosing that kind of thing, though I’d think display problems would point at the analog board rather than the logic board.
If you need a boot floppy, you can often find someone to mail one to you. Say, someone in the same country…

so i tried to redo everything from scratch and when i set up the scsi2sd in the util everything is fine. i unplug it check it again all looks good then after taking the sd out flashing it putting it back in and trying to boot the mac nothing happens then i hook it back to the pc and the log spits out this:

all others are grayed out due to not being enabled other differences are sd card start sector is 22875, sector size is 16394, sector count is 255857693, device size is 32915.9. all other info is blank.
odd thing is if i unplug the board from the pc then do a reboot and plug the usb back in the error in the log is gone and it reads the settings just fine.

Have you tried with a different SD card? Also when you format your SD card, are you doing a full format or quick format.
I had weird issues once before an it was an issue with the card I was using.

Hi, I successfully used SCS2SD 5.1 with a Mac Classic. Starting using the image provide in http://www.savagetaylor.com/wp-content/uploads/68k_Macintosh/Bootdisks/OS_755_2GB.zip and copying it with dd command (available for mac and win) it booted at first attempt! And no need to plug the card to the 5V.
The only cases where i got the Disk? icon was when, by mistake, I tried to boot from a not-bootable partition 0 (zero) so use the link above with OS 755 (works also with 6.08).
Also the Mac Classic is not listed in the compatibility list but however it works.
