I am now happily posting from my new G5!

Specs:

1.6GHz PP G5

256MB RAM <-- This iwll be fixed

Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 AGP Pro 8X 64MB Video (has DVI and ADC)

80GB HD

Superdrive

This things is very fast with "only" 256MB of RAM and a fresh install of Tiger. Now I only have a few updates to finish downloading then I can start installing my software and customizing the machine to fit my needs.

I am soo happy! I cannot wait to really test this thing out.

Craigslist.

$200.

I just ordered 2x512MB from e-bay that should work. It'll give me 1.25GB of RAM which will make Tiger happy. I plan on getting another 2x1GB modules before Leopard. This will get me 3GB of RAM which should be plenty.

Hot damn! I'm trying to find one for my father whose PMG5 1.6 GHz had the processor fail due to overheating (he had put it in one of those cramped cubbyholes some desks come with for the computer).

I checked Mac of All Trades which is in Tampa (close to us in Miami) and they have one with more RAM than he originally had and Tiger (his came with Jaguar) for a little under $800 with tax and shipping included (still cheaper than the price of the replacement CPU). He can then take out the parts from his old G5 and put them on this one if he were to get it, giving him 1.25 GB RAM and 2 80 GB hard drives.

Of course, now I'm wondering if Craigslist might be the way to go despite the dodginess of getting it from someone other than a vendor.

QuadSix50,

I would love to purchase the old G5 case from your dad. This would include:

the mobo

optical drive

powersupply

case

I am completely and totally dead serious. Tell him what I can pay him can reduce the cost of purchase in the end.

All that aluminium for only 200 bucks. America is indeed a crazy place ;) .

Don't the G5s weight like 50-60lbs or something bizare? I know my Mac Pro weighs 27kg which come out at about 56lbs.

It's not too bad on the weight. A little heavier than my now foot stooled B&W G3.

I am now typing from the G5. I hooked up my Ti via Target Disc Mode and am in the process of copying over my docs and whatnot. Unfortunately my Ti has a larger HD than the G5. So I will copy what I can, run to Fry's pick up a 300GB SATA HD, clone the 80GB hd on to it and continue copying stuff from the Ti.

I am really loving this machine. I spent an hour in Civ4 and ran great! It'll run on the Ti, but very slowly.

I truly have entered a whole new world in terms of what OS X can do with a real processor. This single 1.6 blows me away. I know it benches faster than *most* dual G4 setups and that alone means a lot to me.

A friend of mine has a dual 2.0 tower with 4GB of RAM and a 5TB Raid Array (E-SATA) and his machine is insanely fast. I still wish that IBM hand't dropped the ball on the PowerPC architecture and that I could look forward to getting a coveted G6 someday. Until that day comes (holds candle) I will be more than happy with my *new* G5.

Well, I was actually thinking about using the parts myself and see if I could find myself a CPU somewhere. As his son, I would assume that I would get first dibs. ;)

In any case, it's not a big issue for him anymore because his employer purchased a brand new iMac for him to use at work so that will suffice for him now until he can afford the replacement Mac. He's even considered a high-end G4 Power Mac mainly because most of his apps are still PPC-based. Regardless of whether he goes with the G4 or the G5, I will most likely end up with the PMG5. Sorry man... :-x

No worries.

I was looking for an extra G5 case to convert into an external E-SATA RAID Array. I figure I could alteast 8TB in on G5 case. That would be awesome.
