Ok great it worked, however I'm not really sure how to actually set up an afp server from my new mac to the old one, I did read the instructions but I'm still confused.

How do you want to set up your AFP server, and how far did you get? The basic steps are: Decide which directories you want to share, and how to set the permissions for said directories. Depending on how old a Mac you want to connect with, you may have do adjust a few settings, most notable the UAM list.

FYI I just added one more step to the netatalk3 for macOS wiki page that describes how you enable and launch the launchd daemon.

In general, everything you need to know should be in the netatal3 manual, but I do acknowledge that it can be a dense read.
