Roadside Rescue

Hello everyone . I am new here.. and I hope I am posting in the right place. I wanted to share with you my Roadside Rescue last night! I was driving down the road, looked over and seen there was a black case setting on the side of the road. So I stopped and grabbed it. I got it home and realized it was a Apple McIntosh Portable. Model M5120. It has the original case, battery, power cord, and some other type of cords that I'm sure are original and also it has some floppy disks that have not even been opened yet. I'm so excited but yet it doesn't turn on so I'm looking for an original manual. If anyone happens to know of where I could get one, I would surely appreciate the info or any advice. Thank you.

Congratulations and welcome! I started my collection by rescuing a IIfx from being recycled in April. Watch out, I now have another 9 machines and a couple printers 🤣

Should you get it working, there're lots of newly made upgrades for it, too. RAM cards, rebuilt batteries, and one person even used an EL sheet to make the display 100% backlit like a dayglow watch. Pretty neat.

Congrats on the find & rescue!

it was a Apple McIntosh Portable.
And a homage to Jeff Raskin, conceiver of the Mac and its namer The McIntosh was his favourite variety of apple.

At least in American English, “Mc” and “Mac” are pronounced differently…so I’d go with Raskin on this one.

As an aside, I always find it funny when I hear references in British movies to “Mac”Donalds.

That may be so, but the breed of apple in question is called McIntosh.

As an aside, the word Macintosh comes from Irish (aka Gaelic) mac an taoisigh which means 'son of the leader'.
The prime minister of the Republic of Ireland is called the Taoiseach which is roughly pronounced teashock.

Indeed, and I was agreeing...I was just pleased with the computer outcome!

Very interesting history, thanks for that!

Finding portables on the road.. that's a new one.
That's actually how I found my Portable. I was walking down the street from my house and saw a black bag perched up against the garbage can. Saw the Apple logo and grabbed it. Even came with a 4MB RAM card and a modem!
