Replacing Floppy Drive on Classic II

Hey everyone,

Trying to replace the Floppy Disk Drive on my Classic II; not sure what happened but the disk jammed when I ejected it and now the drive won't "let go" of the disk and won't eject. I thought I had the drive aligned properly in the slot, is this fixable and a common problem? Timne for a new drive?

Thanks

The FDD is polled first for a valid System Folder by the system during startup from cold. If the drive's mechanism is working properly, holding down the mousebutton during startup should eject an already-present diskette. If this technique is not successful, and if you cannot use the mechanical eject while the Mac is switched off, you will have to remove the drive for inspection.

Floppy drives were very effective in their day, but that day is now many years behind us. They can be forgiven, if their lubricating grease has hardened, or if someone has attempted a mechanical eject while the Mac was active, any of the aches and pains of age that they show.

There is also the occasional "loose shutter" problem that causes all manner of grief. Do not -- repeat, do not -- grab the disk and pull any harder than very gently. If the disk's shutter has caught on the heads, you can easily destroy the drive in the act of pulling the disk out. Best to follow equill's advice to remove the drive for some maintenance.
