Replacement CD Drive for PB 1400...24x

One of my 12x drives pooped out...I just ordered a new old stock TEAC CD-224e (24x). The 12x drive that failed is a TEAC CD-211e. I seem to remember ordering the 224e before as a substitute. Can anyone confirm that that drive is swappable into the Apple housing?

Wegener has the swap-in 24x drives but does not say what model number, not surprisingly...their price is about 300% of what NOS drives are going for on eBay...

I can confirm it is a straight swap, but you might need to force it to be set as a master drive by shorting pins 45 and 47 on the ATAPI connector. Certain revisions are already set to master, but most aren't.

I recently went through these motions recently (soldering the pins etc), only to find the very drive itself was faulty!

Thanks! Sounds like that will work then; I will post an update after I've done the swap. These 12x TEAC drives seem to fail a lot, just like the original DVD drives for the Pismo. I've had to do a number of transplants there already, too.

I'm interested in hearing the results of your transplant. I have a flaky 12x drive in one of my 1400s that I would like to replace someday. It reads some disks but not others.

On the note of Pismo's, out of 7 pismo's that I have owned or have at least been through my hands, I have only run into 1 bad drive. Not too bad considering their age.

If I'm correct, doesn't the 12x drive use the standard laptop ATAPI connector, rather than the 2.5" IDE connector (like the 6x and 8x drives)? If so, you should be able to swap just about any drive in there, provided you have the correct drivers...another Apple drive might be your best bet.

Good success with a TEAC CD-244e this morning. The 12x drive faceplate is a perfect fit for the mounting holes and the PB1400 recognized the drive without any problems. So, to anyone out there with a failing 211e drive (12x), the 224e drives are still out there for not much cash. A much better solution if you've got a good drive housing! :)
