Recently, I picked up an iBook G3 900. I figured it would be a good OS 9 machine, and relatively compact, and without the hinge issue of the PowerBook G4. I was able to find one in decent condition for dirt cheap. Then, I had the good fortune to be able to replace the hard drive with an SSD. To clarify, by good fortune what I mean is "absolute hell on Earth", but still worth it for the faster disk speeds. I used an M2 drive with an IDE adapter because earlier this year the CF card in my 2400c burned out, and I had the good fortune to be able to replace that as well.

Using a 256GB drive, I am dual booting Tiger and 9.2.2. I prefer the neatness of having each OS on it's own drive since OS 9 is designed for you to do much of your work at the root of the drive while OS X prefers you never set foot there, and I like a certain degree of control over the way I organize the folders on classic Mac OSs. I don't need the extra OS X system folders cluttering things up. Thankfully, I can still use classic mode on OS X because OS X sees the system folder on the OS 9 partition.

I installed a bunch of games which don't work properly in SheepShaver (sometimes due to needing a GPU and sometimes because of general incompatibility).

I also picked up an old UFO AirPort Extreme. Unfortunately, for security reasons I really need to leave it unplugged when I'm not using it, but if it's not the coolest looking router I've ever seen I don't know what is. So I get Wi-Fi on the iBook now, and also on my 2400c - I found an Orinoco gold card and I'm using these drivers to get it working. It's really cool being able to do this, but because of RAM limitations I have to use iCab - I can't use Classila.

Lastly, this isn't a Mac, but I got an old iPod touch so I can relive the glory days of iPhoneOS 1 jailbreaking. Thankfully, the great archiving work from the legacy jailbreak community has made my life much easier (there aren't exactly many working Installer 3 repositories out there these days). Now, if I could only find a #14 dock adapter... I really need to make a thread on the trading post soon and take some photos of some of the things I need to clear out, and requesting things I need.

Congratulations!

I bet is worth it! But hell on earth? Yeah it is not the easiest thing to do, but I have experienced worse things to take apart :)
