Quadra 700 Battery

I got my first ever Q700 on Saturday and the PRAM battery needs replaced.

Before I go through the pain of trying to find out, can someone tell me if I'm right in thinking the machine is similar enough to the IIci that I have to remove the power supply to get to it?

I had the (dis)pleasure of replacing a IIci battery in the summer...

Yes. It is like a IIci/IIcx. The three Macs also have a common PSU. However, from the fifty-fourth replacement onwards, 'tis but a small pain. Yes. One must remove the PSU, but just so that one can remove the FDD/HDD cradle, and then replace the standard 3.6V half-AA lithium battery. Enjoy!

It could be worse, in that you might be obliged to remove the Astec power supply in order to replace that, instead. If such a misfortune should strike you, try to get a Delta PSU as replacement.

I can't see what the big deal is, personally...I can completely gut my Q700 in a couple of minutes. Mine has the Astec PSU, and while it is a pain, its a lot better than just about any PC i've worked on, or any 8x00, or any Performa.

Are the Delta PSUs very common? Most of the IIcx form factor machines that I've seen have had Astec PSUs.

Fairly uncommon, but worth the search. They have the TRKL failure much less often than the Astec PSUs. While that failure can be 'fixed', the fix is a pain, as is the failure of soft shutdown also, which leaves a user with the older 'You can now switch off ...' (or words to that effect) message, but no switch with which to do so. There is then nowt available but to pull out the mains cable.

I agree. Disassembly of the IIcx/IIci/Q700 is no big deal. Just a nuisance for something like a battery replacement. For RAM upgrade, it is barely tolerable.
