PowerPC promo diskette

powerpc.jpg

I got this with a 5400 I picked up some time ago. It came in a foldout paper sleeve as you can see in the photo. It holds a self-extracting stuffit archive containing a Director 5 presentation telling you how wonderfully awesome PPC is and why your life is empty without it. Sort of. Figured it might appeal some some of you guys :)

It's a raw disk image copied with rawwrite. You can use it in an emulator or mount it with DiskCopy. I've also included the original res photo (sorry, no scanner) in the archive.

Nice item for collection :) I want :p
Yeah, I'm trying to build up a collection myself, but it's tough going here. Very hard to find anything classic unless I want to pay a fortune importing via ebay :(

Thanks! It's interesting that the rates quoted for trade-in are in £. Are you in the UK? [edit: nevermind, I just saw that your profile says you are in Ireland]

Note for any Classic users out there, this isn't just a standard Disk Copy .img file. It comes as a .rar (why?) which encloses a .img file apparently created by Disk Utility on OS X, and it isn't mountable in OS 9. Stuffit Expander 6 wouldn't decompress the .rar file, and Disk Copy 6.4 (that's right) wouldn't mount the .img file. I had to do everything on OS X (Leopard, so no Classic) to get the PowerPC.sea file, then I copied to my OS 9 box to decompress and get the presentation application.

If your definition of a "splinter group" is a forum and blog slowly withering away because nobody visits, then http://www.PPCMLA.com is just that. Still, I think the site is pretty neat and I'll keep it running for as long as I remain interested. The hosting fees are low, and I'll hold on to that domain name for as long as possible.

Peace,

Drew

Hi Drew

Sorry you had so much hassle with it. I "tested" it in SheepShaver running 7.5.3 and it mounted fine in DiskCopy 6.3.3 so I figured that it wouldn't be a problem. Sure enough, I've just tried it with 6.3.3, 6.4 and 6.5b13 here in OS 9.2.2 on my iBook and none will mount it :?: .

Because it seemed to work fine, I took the lazy way out and imaged it on the pc so I wouldn't have to stuff a DiskCopy image and then put it onto a floppy to bring back to the PC to upload (I only have one Mac with a floppy and it doesn't have a nic). Lesson learned. In future I'll stick to DiskCopy.

I dropped by PPCMLA last night and yeah it's quiet there alright. Still, it's good to have all the same.

Yeah I was planning to do that alright. Doubt this one will work 4 years from now either :)

This is a DiskCopy 4.2 image. Not the original raw copy.
