Powerbook 1400cs - curious lack of ethernet PCMCIA

This is getting frustrating (although not really, since it's just a hobby machine).

Following on from this thread & post (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=20338#p195981), my Dell Truemobile 1150 wifi card arrived today - and, like the Farallon ethernet card, is not working.

I've confirmed it *should* be a compatible card - Agere systems, 16-bit, 5V, Dell 1150.

Although I'm now running OS 8.1, the WaveLAN drivers and advice on this system 7 today thread *should* work (http://forums.system7today.com/viewtopic.php?t=2923&sid=36709d569b67f38b834caa7fd95f86ec), but don't.

They install fine, but on restart I still get the following error "The correct software you need to use the PC card in "lower PC Slot" is not available. Do you want to eject the card now?". I've tried the card in upper and lower PCMCIA slots, to no avail. I uninstalled the Farallon drivers first, and have tried installing the PPC and 68k WaveLAN drivers (not at the same time!), also to no avail.

I'm wondering if it's some weird left-overs from the original Japanese 7.6 install the machine came with somehow interfering with networking, or if some enabler is not installed.

I've got a 4GB compact flash card and internal adapter coming, so I'm planning a fresh install of US 7.6.1 and 8.1 on different card partitions. Once i get some more RAM I;m also planning an 8.6 install.

Any thoughts on why these damn cards won't recognise properly?

I should add that the card does appear as an icon on the desktop, and is labelled "TrueMobile 1150 Series PC Card".

Just thinking, can be something wrong with the PCMCIA carrier (a bent pin or something similar, a short...) that way, the card will be properly detected but will not work !

Could be - I'd be unlucky for it to affect both slots though!

This could be of relevance - looks like I'll have to try a fresh install once I get my CF card (source: http://home.earthlink.net/~macwireless/#q1):

"1) The software won't work on my PowerBook?

Affected Models: PowerBook 190, 1400 & 5300

If you have a PowerBook that uses Card and Socket Services 2, (the 190, 1400 & 5300) then you can only support one alternate Ethernet network at a time. Wireless is treated as a alternate Ethernet network.

Example: The PB 1400 supports only LocalTalk, IR-Talk, and only one Ethernet at a time. If you install software for a PCMCIA Ethernet card, then remove the software and install wireless software, it won't work on wireless.

You can remove the wireless software and reinstall the Ethernet software and your PCMCIA Ethernet card will work again.

With Card & Socket Services (CSS2), The installers write data to the System File, and the only way to get it to change is to do a clean install or the OS. A Update of the OS won't work.

The AppleTalk Control Panel in my PowerBook 1400 has the following selections, Remote Only, Infrared (IR Talk), Modem/Printer Port and Alternate Ethernet. If you have installed a version of AOL dial up software, you will also have a listing for AOL Link Enhanced. This AOL software does not affect your ability to add wireless."
