Performa 6500 repair adventure

I realize that there was another thread a couple before this one that I had started, and could probably have continued. I hope that it isn't a problem starting a new thread.

Anyways, as some of you have read about in the last thread, I had bought a Performa 6500 board on eBay to stick in my Performa 6300CD to give it a little performance boost (starcraft runs too slow on my 6300CD :'(   though most everything else runs ok).

The board was marked tested and working but when it arrived it didn't work at all. I had to repair some horribly bent pins on the part of the board that plugs into the wiring harness, and then basically I found that when I stick the board in and turn it on, it either chimes and doesn't do anything after that (nothing on screen, etc.) or it doesn't chime at all, and the fan just spins and hard drive clicks a little bit (the hard drive doesn't click after it chimes, for some reason). I tried reseating the RAM, which caused me to void my "warranty" and the seller then refused to offer a return or refund, and eBay sided with him. At least I didn't pay a lot of money for it.

Anyways, since I had a chime from this thing at all, that makes me wonder if this thing might still be repairable. Here is a picture of the board itself (sorry for the flash):

I suspect that the capacitors in the bottom right are probably leaky due to the residue all over the board. It reminds me of my experience with a color classic I fixed last year.

The whole board is extremely dirty. I remember last year someone recommended that I run the CC board through the dishwasher after removing RAM, etc. I remember this cleaned it up significantly. Do you think this would be a good idea? I should use detergent right? (I use the powder kind now, not the liquid)

Thanks in advance.

Definately give that board a clean - I like using isopropyl alcohol spray and a soft tothbrush to clean my boards, I'd never put electronics components through the dishwasher (and eat off the plates put in there too).

Have you pressed the CUDA reset switch, reapplied thermal grease, pulled the cache and tried other DIMMs?

The cuda button is right at the bottom of the memory sticks in between the memory to the ports back of the board.

I would use detergent and good paint brush and go over it, then use isopropyl alcohol over it to remove any grease or anything and then rinse with running water and put it under hot sun for a bit and or put it in the oven at 60 degrees for 10 mins and leave it to dry overnight - just safe mind of thought.
Cheers

I haven't done any recapping myself, but I would definitely recommend cleaning up that mess right of the fan and recapping the board. Dead capacitors are apparently the source of all kinds of misery in terms of non working macs. Does the 6500 not have a PRAM battery? A dead pram battery cab can cause no video on some machines.

I would avoid that seller in the future. It sounds like they may have knowingly sold you a non-working board knowing that most people would do a thing or two they could use as an excuse to void the warranty and keep ebay on their side.

This is based on a faint memory, but doesn't the 6500 require the power supply to offer a 3.3V line?  Does the 6300 supply that 3.3V line.   I have this inkling that 3.3V wasn't available until the 6360...

It could just be that the 6500 logic board won't work in the 6300 chassis without a power adapter.

Or I could be completely misremembering....
