Performa 630: unwanted autostart

I have a Performa 630 which recently refuses to remain "off". A few minutes after shutdown the machine starts itself again. A new battery did not change this annoying behaviour. I would be glad to get a hint how to fix this issue.

I don't have my 630 in front of me so I don't know if it has one but some Macs have a locking switch on the back that automatically restarts the machine in the event of a power failure. I don't know if your problem is related to this but you can look on the back and if you have a button with a slot like a flat screwdriver might fit into, try turning it gently until the button pops out and see if that fixes it. It shouldn't be restarting from a normal shutdown, though. Only if there is an interruption of power while the machine is turned on.

The 630 doesn't. However, it does have a momentary contact button on the back that can be used to start the machine, next to the video port. You may want to check that its not stuck down somehow - it shouldn't be, but somehow it may be stuck down, which is causing the machine to reboot. Press the button a few times and see how it feels, or if you want, you can remove the panel there. Undo the two screws on the back that hold the panel on, and then gently remove the panel. It uses a sort of a hinged design, so be careful of the catches that slot into the case.

If you want the Service manual for the machine, PM me with your email address.
