Performa 5200 - HD Restoration

Hi All

just a quick post to gauge the feasibility of restoring an old Hard Disk from a 5200. It hasn't been spun up in a while and when we tried it (the rest of the computer seemed to work fine), the HD sounded very squeaky. The Mac was unfortunately unable to boot from it.

I've read somewhere that re-lubing it might be an option. Is there much else I can do?

The HD itself has a few applications on it that i've been unable to find on-line so I'm hoping it might be possible to get them off there and onto the Garden although it's not the end of the world if the disk is completely humped :p

Squeaky = head crash. Junk

throw the HDD in the trash, and get another one. its IDE so there should be plenty to go around. You will need a system software CD to restore the machine back to operational status though.

Just try and keep it 20GB and under in size though.

Figured that might be the case. It boots System 8 of a CD fine so I guess its hunting time for a new disk. Cheers :)

yea, unfortunately.

Luckily though IDE is still plentiful and cheap, at least it was the last I checked.
