Not bragging or anything, but I have 3 12x 1400 CD-ROM drives. Much like the other good things in my life, I found them by pure luck, purely by being in the right place at the right time after looking for one for years. And no, I'm not planning to get rid of one any time soon. :)

Apart from a G3, and the 16 bit video card (got the 8 bit one though), and a non-cracked lid, I already do practically have the ultimate 1400...back in Queensland. (like most of my collection it didn't make the move to Sydney with me, but it'll be coming at the first chance I get) The 1400c/166 I've had since back in the day, just looked after well, with a bit of money splashed at it every now and then. :)

Are the Plastics from the Spindly era or is a case of badly engineered parts? It seems like any 1400 that's seen much use at all has signs of stress or actual cracks 1/2" from the hinge the lid.

Anybody wanting to collect a 1400 should start by looking to snap up a 1400 like the PartsBook conquest that started this thread, even if it's a cs, IMO.

I'll have to look through my CD-ROM Drives, so far, of the three I've found at hand I've got a 6x, an 8x and a 12x! ;D

Hi,

I found a 1400cs/133 on the semi-local Craigslist for $50 + $25 shipping. Does that sound fair? It is in working condition, apparently.

I don't have the cash right now, but it's been there for awhile, so I might just say something to keep the door open.

c

p.s. I figured out who jr was!!

p.p.s. Shoot!! :O I owe him some RAM!!!

I'd scrounge two or three on eBay for that kind of money. Unless there is a "just gotta have it" combo of parts inside, that's a lot for a 133cs. You're going to want to build a 166c in the long run and the Processor cards are not interchangeable, IIRC.

Check the price/shipping total of the three I snagged in this thread, I think it's less than $75.00

I suspect it's mostly engineering as it is a pretty common point-of-failure on a lot of older laptops. Heck, my wife's 2yr-old Alienware had an equivalent failure.

That's definitely a snagger . . .

_good feets

. . . have at it! ;)

Heck, there's a clean-looking 1400cs/133 with 16mb RAM on ebay now for $1 opening bid and $15 shipping.
That does sound tempting, but I'm really not a big fan of online auctions (if I'm serious in buying something on eBay, I always look for buy it now, and I avoid auction style listings like the plague, unless it's strictly for educational purposes (i.e., curiosity about prices, etc.), especially sniping (I get tempted, but then driven away when I remember how stressed I felt the last time I did it).
If someone were to bid/snipe for me, and send it over, I'd gladly pay whomever for the favor. It would probably end up being about the same as if I had gotten the local one, though, but it's probably worth it to me (for this moment, anyway :) ).

The c means active matrix, right? and cs means passive??

I guess it'd definitely be more worth it, then.

Hmm...

That StarterBook auction is is a Passive Matrix 1400cs like your local find, but the price will be a lot better and I've checked off all the reasons to bid on it. Try to snipe it in the last minute, bid the max you'd want to pay and see. If you get it fine, if not fine. That's the only way to bid, anyone who bids an item up incrementally over the course of an auction is a pretty much a noob.

That's the way to bid in real life auctions too, wait until the last second and raise your card only when the bidding slows up or gets into your price range and not before. [}:)] ]'>

I'm been decimating the borked lid of a 133cs tonight and I hit the jackpot on the memory cards! It was only 32MB, but the user card is 16MB, so it has the 16MB card in the factory slot.

I'm pretty sure that means I can do a full loadout on the KarmaBook, jr. ;)

There's also room for 4 more of the eight chips that make this TechWorks Card a 16MB config . . . }:)

Someobdy must have really wanted that 1400cs/133. I see it went for $56, in the end.

Great news on the KarmaBook... can't wait to see it.

Wow! The seller did all right on that one. Somebody really wants this one too, I can see why.

I began the 1400 rebuild project just after midnight today. I was brushing up on my laptop spelunking skills on that Borken1400cs. I sure picked the right one to start with for the project! [;)] ]'> Lets see how many nice 1400s I can squeeze out of this pile . . .

. . . I should have one or two really nice 1400c versions arriving soon as well, I ought to hit the two foot mark by the time I've built yours. :D

Gotta post before and after pics of Beater, worst hinge cracks evah!

Have you got a YoYo handy? I'm shy a few AC adapters for this series.

My bedroom workstation, my bed, the dining area HackLab/4 sided Workstations, the shifted dining area Hackstation and table all appear to have been the site of a PB1400 repair depot's multiple parts bin explosions . . .

. . . found another stock 16MB card, in a RoadApple 1400cs/117 with (factor installed?) VidCard that just won't come out, musta' been the highest end POScs/117 ever released! :approve:

Making EXCELLENT progress on both the KarmaBook construction and thoroughly destructive, totally irreversible mystery hack fronts. }:)

At 117MHz and no L2 Cache, a sub-orbital ballistic track seems unlikely . . .

. . . maybe an ejection seat for the POS.CPU.CARD a la Bond . . . James Bond.)
