Garage sale last weekend, for a quarter, with the add-on keyboard! Put in some batteries and it fired right up! Too bad the Palm network is no more. Now it's time to see if I can sync it with my Lombard (which has IR) and my iMac (which doesn't). Too bad I have no cradle, but I'm keeping an eye out at the thrift stores and garage sales for that now. But I'm going to try it with my Lombard because it has IR, but I don't know if it will talk to the Palm or not. I know if I find a cradle, there are USB adapters. But I don't intend to spend any "real" money on it since it doesn't do as much as it used to when the network was up.

I have collected some Palm computers recently, mostly because they are cheap.

they used to be quite expensive in the past, but now nobody wants those anymore (my wife still use her Palm Vx daily ... mostly as an alarm clock)

There are serial cables/cradles available too, which open up a world of low-level hardware fun.

Things that old Palms are useful for, now that they're essentially free:

• Universal IR remote controls
  
• Replacements for character/graphic LCDs
  
• Handheld MIDI controllers
  
• Bike computers
  
• GPS
  
• Microcontroller substitute

You get a cheap, programmable computer with a display and user input. With a bit of imagination and research, and serial I/O to the outside world, they have a thousand uses.

Nice find! I've owned quite a few of those myself. Started out with a Palm Pilot Professional way back in 1997. This was my second year in high school and boy... did it come in handy! It had my day planner, games, notes, I read dozens of books on it... and tweaked it to do just about everything (Some of you old Palm users will remember Hackmaster!)

I also owned, and regrettably later sold, a IIIE, IIIC and M100.

I still have a handful of Palm OS devices lying around that I picked up second hand or new:

- BNIB IBM Workpad (basically the old Palm Pilot Pro)

- Sony Clie SL10 (very small, very light device with a high contrast green-screen)

- Sony Clie NX-73 (notable for the swivel screen & camera)

- Sony Clie TH-55 (still the best and most feature-specced Palm OS device ever made - WiFi, BT, camera, full touch screen. Basically the iPod Touch of its day)

- Palm Tungsten T2.

So far, i have collected:

Palm Vx (bought for spares, but only need a charge)

Palm M105 (a bit bulky, but only needs standard batteries)

Palm M515 (replaced the battery with a new one)

palm T/E (got this one new, but hardly used it as... it never hold the charge for long)

And a Psion 5 series this is a far better alternative to the Palm units, with a bigger screen, touch screen and full keyboard

I "should" still have my Handspring Visor. I used it quite a bit, but found myself using the Mac end of the software more than the actual device. I never did the Palm thing, the expansion slot of the Palm team's second generation creation when they founded Handspring was irresistible.

The EyeModule+ (?) for that slot was what brought it into my kit.

I took many a site inspection shot with it, it was my first digital camera and a GREAT toy too! :approve:

In some ways. The pocketability of the Palm is hard to beat, and the range of available software - including dev tools - is larger. OTOH, you're not going to install Debian on a contemporary Palm }

I do <3 my 5mx (Ericsson MC218)

The MC 218 is really nice, and don't have the peeling paint troubles the Psion 5 and 5 mx used to.

Just collected today a Palm Vx (4 $) without base station nor PSU, but i had a spare...so it's happily charging right now.

Apparently not been used heavily, and complete with stylus and original screen cover. :b&w:

Also part exchanged recently a Vx base station and get a base for the M515... now fully charged

I have been playing Galax in full color, for the first time, in the M515...big improvement compared with the black and white same game in the rest of my fleet.

Just collected a complete Zire M 105 for 2€ (3$) in working order (was 1.4$ but had no change)

Just did it again...

This time i collected a Sony Clié, also Palm powered.

Complete,including psu and cover,working flawlessly.
