Noob SE/30 question: how do you attach the backplate for a PDS card?

Extreme close-up of @LaPorta's earlier photo looks like the coarse-threaded self-tapping screw I also pictured, and not like a 4-40. Look at the thread pitch:

It’s easy to get the screws wrong when reassembling a case. If you disassemble a stock, undisturbed SE/30, though, you should find three fine threaded screws holding the bracket in place, and one coarse screw for the ground - at least, that’s been my experience with ten SE/30’s.

Both of my SE/30s came with (apple) self-tapping screws for the expansion card brackets.View attachment 65177
Interesting.

I have just confirmed my experience above with the other chassis I have within easy reach. Both chassis are stamped with the same part number “805-0938 C.”

If your SE/30’s were not previously touched, it would suggest that some SE/30’s came with the 4-40, and others came with the self tapping screws.

Out of curiosity, I would be interested to know if the chassis part number is different on those that came with brackets held on by self-tapping screws.

I went to the hardware store and got some 4-40 machine screws and #4 self-tapping sheet metal screws (not sure if there's a number for thread pitch on those). The 4-40 did not fit my chassis. They're about the right diameter, but they don't thread in. The sheet metal screws went in fairly easily. Bracket is installed!

I am glad you got it sorted, and regret that my experiences proved not to apply in your case. I was unaware that variations existed.

Just out of curiosity, you happen to have easy access to the part number of your chassis? It’s location is as shown here:
