Need Help Troubleshooting IIe card in LCIII

I have resurrected a LCIII and bought a new IIe card for it but I can't get it to boot. I get an error that says I have a bad IIe card, I am running OS 7.5 and have 32Mb RAM. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I didn't have the latest software; so with the latest it boots into IIe mode. I only have one program, a 5 1/4" game, it doesn't seem to load. But, the drive is an unknown too since it was bought on eBay. Guess I'll have to buy a IIe program on a 3 1/2" disk

Is the drive a UniDisk 5.25" or Apple 5.25" drive? Only the Apple 5.25" drive works with the IIe card.

To see which drive you have, check the label on the underside of the unit. Other than original color (which is tough to tell since so many drives have yellowed) the drives look alike--and actually behave alike on Apple IIs (but not the LC card).

It is an Apple 5.25 drive. It's a bit dirty, so I'll try to clean it up and see if I can clean the "read" head(s). I'm thinking that I might be able to find an II share ware program on the net that I could download and put on a 3.5 inch floppy drive. Can I put an Apple II program on a Mac formatted floppy and have the internal drive read the program? Thanks, Pete

Have you tried it without the Y cable attached? When I first had a IIe card I didn't have the cable and I believe without the cable it dropped me into the startup screen with a basic prompt.

Here's where I am: I have the IIe running; I can get to the IIe profile page. I disassembled and cleaned the Apple 5.25" drive including the read head an re-assembled it. The LCIII still does not read my only 5.25" diskette. I have insured that the disk is in a slot (there's only one that accepts it). The LC seems to try to read the diskette, but just spins and locks up the IIe. I'm going to see if I have a Mac that will accept the 5.25" drive (I have SE 30 & FDHD - both are intermittent due to bad capacitors, a IIsi, a IIci, IIFX and of course the LCIII. If any of those have a port, I'll see if that Mac can see and read the 5.25" diskette.

My other path will be to see if I can create a 3.5" diskette with a IIe program on it; not sure how to do that yet.

You'll need an Apple II to read the 5.25" diskette. The drive you have will plug into the back of the IIc, IIc+, and IIGS, and will work on a II, II+, or IIe with the proper floppy controller (make sure the card in one of those machines has the DB19 port and is not the Liron card, which is for 3.5" disks). If you don't have an Apple II, I recommend buying a known working IIc, as it has an internal drive and can simply plug into a TV for a monitor.

NEVER connect a 5.25" drive to a floppy port on a Mac. Doing so will likely fry a few things. The only Mac that can accept an Apple II 5.25" drive is a machine with an LC PDS that has the IIe card installed. Also, the Mac OS does not read 5.25" disks natively--only through IIe emulation (the card) or on early machines outfitted with the PC Drive (another 5.25" drive designed for DOS compatibility).

My guess is that the disk is bad. If you can find another known good 5.25" disk, try it in the drive.
