Need help converting old Ready,Set,Go! files to pdf/jpg

My Dad gave me 318 vintage 800K floppy disks. He figured he was never going to look at the contents of them again. (Considering he doesn’t have an old Mac that can ready them anymore.) Since I’m such a huge collector of all things vintage Apple, and I have a good 20 vintage Macs, he figured I could use them.

I got them in the mail and started going through them. 90% of it is old work stuff. My Dad works for an electronics company and he used to do all the tech pubs stuff nack in the 80s/90s. He designed all their product packaging, brochures, advertising, owner’s manuals, etc. He did it all in MacPaint, MacDraw, MacDraft, and Ready,Set,Go!

I got a real kick out of seeing some of his creations from the mid 80s. The MacPaint files were easy enough to convert to .jpegs. I opened all the MacDraw file in Mini vMac and resaved them as PICTs. I then opened the PICTs in GraphicsConverter and resaved them as jpgs. MacWrite files were easy too. I just added “.txt” to the end of them and opened them in TextEdit.

I sent the 1500 files to my Dad and he was thrilled to see them again. Not all of it was work stuff, some of it was personal stuff too.

As far as the Ready,Set,Go! files, those are proving to be more of a challenge. My Dad was a beta tester for RSG. They sent him version 2 to try out. He loved it. A lot of the stuff he did was with RSG 2. When RSG 3 came out, they sent him a copy. He started using that. Same with version 4. The problem is, RSG hasn’t been updated in years. The last version to be released was version 7. The developer is still charging $200 for it, even though I think they’ve abandoned development on it. It doesn’t run on 10.7-10.8. I downloaded the demo and have it running on my Mac Mini with OS X 10.5. Print and Save is disabled. It can open older files, but only version 4-6. Most of My Dad’s files are version 2, some 3, and some 4. He has RSG 4, but it doesn’t open the RSG 2 files.

What I had to do was, open all 318 files one at a time in RSG 3 and re-save them as RSG v3 files. I then had to re-open those 318 files one at a time again in version 4 and resave the RSG v3 files as RSG v4 files. Now all 318 files are version 4 and can be opened with the RSG 7.7 demo. It took me a good 6 hours straight to resave all 318 files from v2 to v3 to v4.

The problem is, that seems to be as far as I can go. I was hoping to be able to just print them to .pdf and send them to my Dad as is. Or maybe save them as .jpgs. But the developer disabled save and print in the demo. Software nowadays is so cheap. Most decent apps like this are $30-40 bucks at most. Apple charges $20 for Numbers or Pages. Pixelmator is $30. Even RapidWeaver 5 that I consider expensive is $80. I’m not cheap, and I’ve spend a ton of money over the years on software. I agree, developers should be paid for their hard work, but it’s crazy that their charging $200 for an app that hasn’t been updated in years and won’t run on OS 10.6-10.8.

Printing and saving in the RSG 7.7 demo can be unlocked with a serial # but its’ just crazy that they want $200. I’m not looking to use the software to create files. I just want to convert these 300 files to .jpgs or .pdfs and then uninstall it. I'll probably use the app for 4 or 5 hours and then be done with it.

Anyone have any suggestions to convert these files to pdf/jpg? Do you think if I pleaded my case to the developer, they’d throw me a serial #? Is that crazy?

It never hurts to ask.

IDK what format RSG uses, but I've opened an amazing variety of formats in Adobe Illustrator and exported them as .pdf with AI9 under 9.x.x.

CorelDraw on either platform also comes to mind as another Rosetta Stone of DTP/Graphic file formats.

Weird, how'd I get a double post? I just made an edit to correct a typo and saved. Yeh, kill the other one.

Yeh, I don't have CorelDraw or Illustrator.

Done, I swapped the .TXT to this IP before I did so as well. If the version above doesn't suit you, copy it into a new post and edit it again. I can swap it out once more and then delete the reply with the new .TXT.

PM if you want me a test file to see if AI9 works.

There was a thread about RSG some time ago at Macintoshgarden.

IIRC it is possible to run RSG with a emulated Mac setup and print to file with PrintToPDF in there.

I think RSG4 was running with BasiliskII, output might be more desirable with Acrobat, but PrintToPDF should do for a test drive.

I tried v2,3,4 and 6 on my OS 8.6 machine, and none of them run. Version 2-6 don't have any kind of export feature. I have to run it in Mini vMac on Sys 6 or 7. Is there something that I can print to .pdf with in Sys 7x? That might help. Remember, I have 300 files to do, so it'll take a while if I have to do it in Mini vMac. That's why I'd rather do it in version 7 on my Mac Mini, but I don't have a serial number to unlock the RSG 7.7 demo.

I sent an email pleading my case to the developer and asked to "borrow" a serial number for a few hours, but I'm afraid it'll fall on deaf ears. We'll see.

PrintToPDF works fine for me with this exact setup (did not test any other setups):

Host = Power Mac G4 MDD, OS X 10.4.11

Basilisk II b17

68030 with FPU

Quadra 700/900 ROM

Mac Model: Mac IIci

640x480, 32-bit

System 7.5.3

I printed a ReadMe in SimpleText and it produced a PDF file that worked fine.

That totally works. I set up a BasiliskII installation with 7.5.5, print2pdf, and RSG 4.5.

It works. I can print them to pdf.

Off to work...I have 300 files to convert.

Thanks for all the help!

I spoke too soon! I've been hitting some snags. It appears as if print2pdf doesn't always work in Basilisk or Mini vMac. It randomly gets hung up. Some print, some hang. I'm trying to pinpoint the problem but I think it either has to be a problem with files with multiple pages, or a font issue.

Anyway, I installed RSG and print2pdf on my PM5200/75 and it seems to work on that. Files that were hanging in Basilisk are successfully printing on my PM5200. So I don't know if it's an emulation thing or not.

It's going to be slow moving, but at least it's working.

An alternative is to print to a postscript file, which is built into the operating system. From the Mini vMac FAQ:

How can I print from Mini vMac?

There is no direct support for printing, but you can use the ability built into System 6.0.8 and later to print to a Postscript file. You can then export this file to the host computer, and print it from there.

To print to a Postscript file, select LaserWriter in the Chooser, then print from your application as normal, except that in the print dialog, choose PostScript File as the destination. To transfer the resulting file to the host computer you can use ExportFl. The Preview application in Macintosh OS X 10.4 or later can open and print PostScript files. (The name of the file should end with ".ps" to allow Preview to recognize it as PostScript.) Other operating systems may require additional software to print PostScript files.

ExportPS is a specialized variation of ExportFl that saves a few steps when printing.

Warning : printing to a Postscript file in System 6.0.8 has sometimes been observed to generate invalid Postscript. This problem may be fixed in later System versions. I've not had trouble with my preferred version: System 7.1 with System Update 3.0.
