My first hack a success!

I successfully applied the hires 640x480 hack on my Color Classic. I've never even soldered before. Turned out great. :D

My next step is to solder on a resister so I can expand the screen to the edges. The black border is about 2" along the perimeter for it to avoid unmodifiable warping.

Only burned myself twice with the soldering iron. I'll consider those battle scars. :rambo:

I'm also ordering a 256KB VRAM chip so I can crank that puppy up to thousands colors. It currently has a 128KB VRAM, but when I upped it to 640x480, it could only do 256 colors again. I'm heading down to the local computer recycler tomorrow, hoping to find a newer model LC that I can use for the motherboard.

Next project: Solder new capacitors on my BNC CRT 23" Philips monitor. I love that thing, but it's started to get the jitters. Some helpful techies suggested replacing the capacitors and possibly the horizontal and/or vertical oscillator.

why is it in this day and age there are still lots of people that don't own cameras? it's not hard to get an inexpensive one new that doesn't suck terribly or buy one that doesn't really suck at all second hand.

I have a pretty old yet still fully functional 4MP Kodak with half-decent macro that I'd sell to you dirt cheap.

Congratulations on a hack well done, comrade!

. . . you have a good plan in place for both fixes and you've earned you battle scars! :rambo:

Why, in this day and age, do people assume that a picture is necessary for a hack which DOES NOT alter the outward appearance of the machine in question?

Take it easy on the guy and can the sarcasm for the time being, please! [;)] ]'>

That said, BEFORE & AFTER screenshots, with the monitor control panel settings and an appropriate profiler window, listing system specs would be much appreciated. [:D] ]'>

. . . which does not even require a camera, digital OR real!)

I can provide an after screen shot when I get home. :)

I'll definitely have before & after pictures when apply some Retr0Bright to the computer case, keyboard, and mouse. I think that's apart of the usage agreement for Retr0Bright. :p

Anyone know if this capacitor will work to fix my barreled video problem? It currently has about a 2" black border, I wanted to stretch it out more. Looks a little weird.

http://www.opamp-electronics.com/catalog/00033uf-3300pf-3kv-ceramic-capacitors-pack-p-737.html

The original instructions say start with 1000pf and step up to 4000pf for preference, though most people use the 4000pf. Problem is I can't find one like that, it's almost always 4700pf which is too much.

So I found this one which is 3300pf (sort of in the middle) and is rated for 3000v, which is definitely higher than 1500v. It is also a ceramic disc capacitor.

I found a 3300pf, 2kv capacitor at a component shop near my house. I soldered it on and it looks great. Only 1/4" black border now. Here's a screen shot, and I'll upload a picture of the CC once I find a USB cable. As you can see, it's back down to 256 colors. I'm going to buy a 256KB VRAM which should be enough for thousands at 640x480.
