A friend of mine who's relatively new to dealing with vintage Macs is having trouble figuring out how to fix the drives that came with his Mac Plus. The internal drive seems to partially work but is having some issues reading disks. It won't startup from a system disk, and was giving disk errors trying to read another disk. The machine also came with an external third party floppy drive - an McD 800 (model info pictured below). It seems to be working fine, but is very noisy when reading from a disk. My friend took it apart hoping to clean it but unplugged a couple of cables he's not sure how best to reconnect.
This is the best photo he took of the cables before disconnecting them:
Here's a photo of where the cables are coming from:
Does anyone here have any experience with cleaning or lubricating an McD-800 drive? Perhaps any advice on how best to proceed? It seems like information on this type of drive is harder to come by.
