Macintosh Classic II

Hey,

I’ve just joined the forum! Along with everyone else, lockdown has got me very bored so I ventured into the loft yesterday...I have a load of vintage computers I used to collect when I was a teenager (I think everyone else was drinking cider in parks, but I’ve never been one to conform).

I decided to try and get my Macintosh Classic II (January 1993 - 40GB HD, 8GB RAM, OS7.1) working, which has sat untouched for about 15 years. I had the typical NUFC black and white striped screen, so I took the logic board out, gave it a wash and to my surprise - it came back to life! Some cool stuff still on it - Prince of Persia, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.

I think the leaky capicitors have stopped the audio from working though - the washing didn’t fix that. Does anyone have any tips on getting the audio working again? If the capacitors need replacing, that is definitely beyond me! Also, any tips on cleaning up a ‘yellowing’ case? Finally, the power button on the keyboard (Apple Keyboard II) doesn’t seem to work, any tips?

I’ll upload some photos soon. I am yet to find my PowerBook Dup 280c (have avoided looking at that for about 15 years also since my Mum dropped it and smashed the screen).

The logic board should be recapped. Then the audio will work again and there will be no more damage of the board by leaky caps.

The analog board should be recapped else.

The power button has no function at the classic II.

Yellowing can be reduced with H2O2 (peroxide). Search for retrobright.

Thanks for this! I think re-capping is beyond me mind you...might see if anyone in the UK can offer this.

That classic II does not look very yellowed. I have macs with much more yellowed cases.

Recapping is not very difficult. There are tutorials at youtube. I learned it by these tutorials and did it for my macs (SE/30, classic, classic II).

Perhaps Bolle can do the recapping for you. I think he lives in germany.

Hello from the other end of England! :)

While I was looking, I also found a chap in Ireland who does it who appears to be a Mac specialist.  Eventually I decided to learn to do it myself though.  It's not as bad as it sounds—I do not have steady hands and am by no means good at attention to detail and I'm getting the hang of it.  I'm certainly not in the position to do it for other people yet, though...

Another option to consider is that Classic II logic boards seem to come up reasonably often on the Trading Post here, often recapped; that's where I got mine from.  Recapping a spare board is a lot less nerve-wracking than recapping your only board :) .
