Mac Plus with video problem

I'd say it's the CRT, but you should wait for the real experts to tell you.

The CRT is a glorified lightbulb, so it can't be the cause of what you're seeing. Instead, your Mac is suffering from the common Type 2 (or possibly Type 1) framistat/grodulator failure. You might find some troubleshooting and repair tips in http://68kmla.org/files/classicmac2.pdf.

Try resoldering the deflection yoke and flyback connections as described in the doc. That will likely restore much framistatic grodulation. If not, replacing C1 may also be needed (read the doc for this and other tips).

Tom, there's an error with that link but I feel like I have that document downloaded somewhere. I'll check my documents folder. I guess if I'm a true classic Mac fan I'm going to have to learn some resoldering skills if I want to enjoy them. I've avoided it thus far but I now have several acting up on me. I suppose it's time to jump in.

Hmm...somehow the sentence-ending period became part of the URL -- sorry about that. Just remove the offending period and it should work.

Sounds like an analog board issue (described above) to me. I've seen the flakiest looking CRTs become usable again with the right repairs/replacements.

Indeed, a true classic Mac fan is never far from his soldering iron. The ones they make for computers at Radio Shack work well. I can also recommend Weller products--I've got an old soldering gun from them that's 40+ years old and still works.

Thanks Scott, I'm certainly having to "warm" up to the idea of getting more technical. I'll have to do a bit of research and find a decent soldering iron and then something to practice on before I delve into this Mac. I certainly don't want to learn on the Plus! I've also got an SE and SE/30 suffering from video issues.
