They never put them on. It is cost saving. Chip on board is cheaper than other methods of encapsulation.Nice! I really wonder why Dove liked pulling the plastic case off those 68030s...
Right, best I can tell those are the RP (Plastic PGA) variant of 68030 less the cover. I too am surprised that motorola would furnish them in that state, I'd think the sales quantity is low enough to make it not worth their while....They never put them on. It is cost saving. I'm just surprised that Motorola sold them dies, or chips in that state.
If I remember, Dove was extremely early in the 030 market. I think they were the first to sell an 030 upgrade. They released it possibly at a similar time to the Mac II! But... I'd need to go back and read that edition of Byte magazine in case I'm just muddled.Right, best I can tell those are the RP (Plastic PGA) variant of 68030 less the cover. The most common fault with Mac Plusses is dry/cracked solder joints on the analogue board, usually the flyback or the cable connectors.
Not prime number Sieve?I assume 'sieve' is the Sieve of Erastosthenes. Dhrystone is an integer/string benchmark, but isn't the Sieve of Erastosthenes. My wild guess for the difference would be something to do with memory bandwidth, as I think Dhrystone does a lot of string copying/movement/manipulation whereas the Sieve of Erastosthenes is purely numerical. But that is just a wild guess.
