Mac Plus Floppy won't lock in place

Hey guys

Finally got my Plus working and the floppy drive has started acting up. I'm hoping it just needs greasing. Some times when I insert a disk, the drive with go back and forth, through the action of ejecting a floppy that isn't there.

Does it on and off, is this common? There any good guides out there? Also can I transplant an external floppy drive into the plus?

Lots of times the switches on the front sides of the drive that detect whether: - a floppy is in there/ a floppy is write protected / a floppy is a High Density (1.44MB) disk - Gum up and give your Mac false readings. My advice would be to take out the drive, and give it a good clean with cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol. Use plenty as it will evaporate anyway.

Just make sure you be careful around the read and write heads.

Also, greasing it would not be to weird of an idea either, remove the old grease and apply tiny dabs of something like sewing machine oils.

This all worked magic on all my disk drives that had problem (and nearly all of them had problems :) )

Also, most of the external drives are exactly the same drives as used internally with a nice case and a cable. Just make sure it is the right type of drive, a plus needs an 800K drive.

(though i have no idea about the mounting bracket found on the plus, i figure you could just reuse it with a similar drive)
