Mac IIci recapped - rare video card from Miro

Hi,

just finished recapping my IIci with tantalums. Works nicely. You can see it getting a fresh System 7.5.5.  :ii:

The machine came with a rare video card I guess. It is a Miro Prisma Plus V 1.1.d made in W. Germany (1989) :)

There where no drivers for the video card on the hard disk so I have to see if I can find some somewhere. I was wondering if the card should have been at least recognized by the system. Tried the tool Snooper and it said the card's Nubus slot is empty?!

In addition to that the IIci also has a cache card which is not the Apple type:

It says UR-MICRO Inc. copyright 1990 on the card. Could not find any info for this card...

How can I check if the cache card works?

Any hints and help are appreciated.

Best, bobo68

I need to get my hands on a IIci. It's perhaps my favourite form factor - it's the one I remember seeing in an education environment and wishing I had the money to buy at the time. In any case, great work on the capacitor replacement. I have a Spring break (of sorts) coming up, and I plan to spend all of it recapping my Macs (it will be my first time). Uniserver tends to go for the ceramic capacitors and I've been up in the air between getting ceramic or tantalum. Did anything in particular sway your decision in going for the tantalums?

Tantalums tend to be cheaper, which is mostly why they're favored, I think.

Ceramics are more expensive, but perhaps they're better? I don't know much about them.

Good luck on your projects!

No, sorry. I'm not an expert on this and I never really thought about ceramic caps.

I first wanted to replace the electrolytic caps with new electrolytic ones but then went for tantalums because the electrolyte obviously can do huge damage. Tantalum works for me in the Macs (I heard that there are usages where they are not a good replacement for electrolytic caps), they do not age (I think), they are cheap - so why not?

Tantalums are favored because they don't leak in the future.

Ceramics aren't available in the larger capacitances or maybe the higher voltages or didn't used to be.

The newish solid mumble (polymer?) capacitors might be the best choice, but they are more expensive -- also relatively new, so they could come with some surprise down the road, but they're probably good.
