Mac Classic II

I just got ahold of this baby. I noticed one problem though. When I start it up after several days of not using it, it turns on, no startup sound and some bars appear on the screen. If I leave it like this for a few minutes then power it off and back on, it starts up fine. Any ideas mates? Thanks!

Mine does this too but it only takes maybe 20 seconds or so to kick-in and chime. Then I get a loud siren sound from the speaker. The capacitors need replacing most likely. If yours won't kick-in at all they may be in a worse state than mine (?)

My SE/30 does this. I just turn it off then turn it on again right away and it works fine.

Sounds like my classic before I ran it through the dishwasher. It was just bad caps on mine.

Most likely it's bad caps, as other people have said.

However, there are many hard-power Macs (usually '030 or '040-based) that refuse to boot properly without a good PRAM battery. I learned to jump some of mine, either via the reset button (if available) or a quick power cycling.

Later models with both soft power and hard power switches (typically AIO models, like the LC 520) may need to sit plugged in with the hard switch turned on for a day or two before they'll power up via the keyboard power button, regardless of the PRAM battery. Equill helped me with that tip when my new Mac TV wouldn't turn on.

The Classic II is not affected by a dead battery. I've used a Classic II with a bad battery extensively in the past (to the point where I stuck the "Date & Time" control panel in the "Startup Items" folder until I could get a replacement) and never had any problems with bootup. (The LC475/Quadra 605, both with rocker switches for power, are notorious for not starting up if the battery is dead).

I agree with those who have listed caps as a problem.

Why does it have to sit? I can't imagine some kind of capacitor taking that long to charge, etc...
