LapisColor MV16 EN Compatibility

I received a PB190 with a 5300C screen, very nice machine in excellent quality.

It came with a NIB Lapis Ethernet/Video out combo card, specifically stamped "For PowerBook 5300"

When installed, the screen powers on (to the gray dithered screen, before Welcome To Macintosh, or the MacOS screen) and just sits there.

What is odd though, is that the video card installed is FOR a 5300.

Does the video portion of that slot interact with the processor differently than the network? With the 5300 video card it works perfectly.

I cannot find ANY record of the 190 version of this card (though the box says there was one), so it was either a huge flop, or the 5300 version should work and I've done something wrong.

Try hooking the PB up to an external monitor - chances are it's just screen spanning

I didn't mention that I never hear the hard drive spin up when the lapis card is in.

So yeah, that.

Anyone have any experience with this card/ compatibility between cards for the 5300 and 190?

I thought that the mv16-en was compatible across the 5300 and 190, though not sure about the 8-bit video card or the video card sans ethernet.

I have a 5300c +mv16-en card, I'll try the card in my 190 when I get a chance and post about the results.

Could the HD not spinning up be a result of not enough power from the power adapter?

Please do!

The box does specifically list different part numbers for the 5300 card and the 190 card, so I am not 100% sure. In my googling, I can't find reference of anyone ever using or posting about the 190 specific card.

I would love to know if your card works in both. I get screen light up, but nothing after that happens. I would definitely prefer this card over a PCMCIA card.

Actually, I will send this card to anyone with a 190 to test for me, if they think it should work.

I finally got around to swapping out the card from my 5300 into my 190. Unfortunately, I got the same result as you.  :(  My card has a note "FOR 53XX"1 so I guess that the 190's card would say something like "FOR 19X".

I incorrectly assumed that the MV16EN was a universal card, because the Installation software had options to install the driver for the 5300 or 190 series, but only had 5300 drivers for their MV16 and MV8 cards. Sorry to get your hopes up!

1. Makes me wonder if Apple planned to release other alternate models, like a 5316, following their PowerMac lines.
