IRC Behavioural Issues.

Just stop it you two.

This thread is not for fighting about who was banned/kicked by who and who can say the most offensive thing.

What happened with MacTCP in the IRC channel was one of the IRC users threw feces at him, so he pulled feces out of Mr. 680x0 to throw at that person. He got Perm IP banned.

While that may seem gross(and is pretty gross), there has been much worse things going on in the IRC without people getting banned.

Every time I join theres worse jokes than in a South Park episode.

Also things such as the format trick someone played on MacintoshMan, and people in general being assholes.

i typically log on while making dinner or playing a video game, which i find helps immensely, as i get to skip 90% of the drama.

i think part of the problem is people spending too much time focused on the IRC window. go...do something for chrissakes.

i was there when it was fun to be there, recently tho, its just gone down hill. like my friend mactcp getting banned for stupid things. ive been there for a while, and have heard, and probably said much worse without as much as a warning. i think that we all could do a little growing up, myself included. Like I have said in the past, I really just dont want to see this forum go the way of AF.

There's a reason I don't ban many people. It'd be myself, Unknown_K, and maybe one or two other people.

There needs to be something that's easy to track, and to enforce. What I'm hearing now is a lot of silly bickering. This thread isn't about who said what and in what order and what the context was. This thread was created to combat that, and so far it has caused more of it.

I agree completely with SiliconValleyPirate's suggestion for a set of guidelines, and I agree with Unknown_K's statement that the 68kMLA IRC channel does represent this forum, and that it's very easy for something going on in the channel to make the forum look *very* bad.

I suppose it is reasonable of #68kMLA as the school cafeteria where the rules are not as rigid as a classroom, but there is still a set of standards; not as your parents' basement where all kinds of awful shenanigans can break loose without consequence.

I concur. I only check IRC channels a couple of times a night typically, when i've got 5 mins and I'm idling, or of my notify makes a noise. The same is true of any IRC channel - the more you hang around there the more you end up talking crap. It can be amusing if you are all grown up about it but frankly, you guys ain't. The bickering in this thread from MacTCP and those talking against him above is just such an example of the purile 'did not!' 'did so!' 'did not!' 'did so!' 'did not!' 'did so!' crap I got sick of. I'd have banned all of you involved for 24 hours by now just to get some peace and quiet ;)

Like I said though I have very little patience as an op, and I have really 'bad' days too, when I really could ban anyone for anything. Hence why I didn't volunteer.

:p

If bad people are continued to be banned, everything should be fine. :b&w:
Like how you were banned for causing trouble and being disgusting?
::)

Just let me point out some things:

1. I never sweared just so you know.

2. These "disgusting things" weren't any more disgusting than the "iSecks" and "fapping in the shower" discussions you all had numerous times.

3. The "disgusting thing" I said was in response to something said to me under the same topic.

4. I never "caused trouble" or "picked fights." That was never done by me.
Woah, this sounds really terrible :'( I was on your side when there was all that trouble before about this issue as on the forums it came across to me that you were innocent and it was that other guy causing the problems, but I'm not so sure now. I really do think that this IRC channel should be made completely "unofficial" ie no link on the site and none of these discussions on the forum about what's happened on this channel – if I came here as a potential new member and saw all this stuff here at the top of the forum, there's no way that I would stick around as it would give me such a bad impression of the place. I had thought all of you seemed really nice from how you are on the forum, but reading this I get a very different impression of a lot of you :(

I also agree that something needs to be done about the behavior in this room. There are several people that seem to like to pick on others and from there it turns into a domino effect in some cases where everyone else joins in. In one case I saw people recommending some one to perform a "/exec -o rm -rfv /" and after most members lied about the function of rm the poor person executed the command causing damage to his system, they did not stop there either however and further recommended that the person do a del *.* on their windows system and as before lied about the function of the del command. While most cases the teasing isn't this malicious it still can be hurtful and IMO is still unacceptable. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to be attacking another person. This is just unacceptable and something needs to be done to stop this. I have not seen such behavior in any other channel and find it amazing that this behavior continues to go on in this channel. This behavior not only reflects poorly on the participants but it also reflects poorly on 68kmla and the vintage computing community as a whole.

i was a few peoples punching bag, i was tired of it and left. no one needs to go through what i did on the channel. granted some people went through allot more then i did, but i still went through allot.

and that does put a bad image into peoples head about the forum as well

Since so many others have caused others to get a false bad impression of me, now even on the forums, I'd better leave now.

My final words:

I am innocent.

all this makes me think...

Its not only going downhill with the IRC channel, but also with the forums. the problems from IRC spread over into the forums and people start to leave and search for other places to hang out...

Before I came here I was an AF member and left the fritter, because things went crazy there... I was looking for a better place with a community that respects other people and their opinions (not that this was a probelm over at the fritter... there only were to many dumbish *sorry ;) * people wo talked too much shit)

when I came here this was a really nice place with only friendly and nice people. If nothing is changed, I think I´m going to leave this place as well... ( I dont say that I always behaved the right way!)

I really got alarmed when I receaved a PM from another forum member to join his forums to come to a better place with kinder people... I think going away and forming a new community is only a last resort.

We should really try to change our behaviour here and on IRC to bring this place back to what it once was. A nice community of kind people with the interest in vintage (apple) computers.

just my 2 cents...

Look the problem is with a few people both in the forum and on irc, if they went away so would the problems.

The fact that the mods in both places are too afraid of cracking the whip when needed means it will go on forever.

Lets not make a bigger deal out of this then it is, a few immature people going back and forth like anybody cares.

It's not just people from the IRC channel that are causing the forum to go downhill. Imo, it'll never be as good as it was before the crash. I'll probably end up leaving too. I haven't really posted here much in the past couple months anyways.

I agree, the encouraging of rming a unsuspecting users drive from the root was overlooked by the ops when in any other channel the instigators would have been banned, it is certainly frustrating to see that while there are ops they seem to lack the desire to actually use the power granted to them. But then again the ops seem more then happy to crack the whip on new users but are quite reluctant it seems to do anything to users who have been around for a while no matter what they do.

I think it's really stupid when people decide to leave forums..

IRC, yes, some people there are REALLY big jerks and they need to get off their high horse.

But the forum is different, there is arguments, and people come and go, but leaving because someone doesn't agree with you/your angry at what someone said, is just stupid. It's like taking your toys and going home.

What's different between this board and others that I frequent is that there's a much larger range of ages here. As much as we all would like to think of ourselves a mature individuals, the reality is that the age differences are going to create social issues. We're never going to all agree on acceptable behavior because the very definition changes with age.

As someone old enough to remember getting flamed on Usenet and Compuserve (using a brand new IIcx!), I've gotten to the point where I've learned to just not let it get to me. I've never been on the IRC channel, but I really haven't seen much on this board that's all that bad.

I personally like this board. It's nice to see some of the youthful enthusiasm mixed in with us old guys. There's also a crazy level of knowledge here - just about any question you can think of will pull someone out of the woodwork with an answer. If someone acts like an idiot, I just ignore it. Life's too short to spend time worrying about internet pissing matches.
