well my ibook arived and its super!

upped the ram with a 128mb stick and put my airport card in and all worked well on os9.2.2. of course with no need for an ibook apart from the fact i liked the curves i decided to try linux on it.

and even tho i only have 196mb ram - fedora core runs pretty well, and i only took 1/2hr to get wifi working too.

very pleased about that one. still cant get the ibooks sound card detected mind you. but small potatoes really.

so!

if you have a clamshell ibook, are a linux newbie, then i heartily recommend fedora core 5.

worked pretty much out the box, and as a wee change it uses gnome over kde.

there you go - one happy bunny! ;D

Nice! Hopefully you can get the sound working, but like you said, small potatoes really.

Thanks for the recommendation on Fedora by the way. I'd like to try it on my G4, but i'll have to wait for the new Fedora 7 (they dropped the "core") which is due for a release on May 27.

i read about it in some linux mag. its thing for me was airport support as part of the instal. i have played around with linux off and on over the years, but i really wanted to avoid trying to install drivers for the card and setting it all up. this was a big 'ole chuck of cake.

i remember spending a month one in mandrake 9 trying to get my printer to do anything more than print a test page. that was a very frustraiong and depressing month. i didnt manage it in the end either.

heh heh linux can suck sometimes :D I like th efact that all the new (er) versions are 'complete' and don't require too much to get up and going.

still get get the sound working tho.

there are a bunch of updates that i think i need. but my low ram, means that the updater seems to crash at the end, as does the add and remove gui app.

still a new ram stick is winging its way to me as we speak, so i should have a snappier system next week.

but, on less than 200mb and a 366mhz g3 machine, i really am quite impressed about how well its doing. online is fine, small screen rez of course, but it is a perfectly usable machine.
