IIsi Nubus adapter in SE/30 with SiliconExpress IV?

Can a SI PDS/NUBUS adapter card be used in a SE/30 to support an ATTO SiliconExpress IV card? If not why not? Thanks for your help.

I don't believe anyone has tried it; in principle, it could work.

The biggest issue you will encounter is physical space; the IIsi NuBus adapter fits in a IIsi. The difficulties you will have will be similar to the ones I had installing a IIsi Daystar adapter into the SE/30: http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/random/se30_turbo040/

There may be other compatibility issues.

If you're doing this, you will probably want one of the 50MHz 68030 upgrades that goes in the CPU socket. It would be silly to hot-rod the disk I/O in a 16MHz SE/30.

AFAIK, nobody has ever gotten the NuBus adapter for the IIsi to work in an SE/30. There's a signal called /NuBus on the IIsi PDS that's unimplemented on the SE/30 PDS. Pretty sure it's an address line for a Slot ID unsupported in the SE/30's firmware.

One back burnered project is to jumper a supported address line to the proper NuBus pin on the adapter to create a supported Slot Address for the SE/30. Doesn't mean much in practical terms even if it works because of physical incompatibilities. A new version of the IIsi adapter would need to be designed to use chips harvested from a IIsi adapter or a DuoDock, but there's a possibility of fitting a pair of short NuBus Cards inside the SE/30 in the area of the HDD if it's replaced with a 2.5" Savvio or one of the smaller solid state setups.

To Trash80toHP_Mini,

Have you been successful in altering the IIsi NUBUS Adapter card to fit into the SE/30? I've read a very old AppleFritter post where removal of the math chip was also suggested. Also, in recent discussion with tt he suggested removing the clock. Do these things have to be done also. Thank you for your time.

Knew about the extra FPU, that'll be de-soldered. Don't understand why the clock might be problematic, dunno. Look into it if and when.

Progress? HRMMM?????:

*  My first functional, recapped SE/30 board arrived from mj313 last week, it's been booting to a curious floppy disk for three days straight now.

*  I've got an SE/30 Adapter for the IIsi NuBus Adapter coming together rather nicely on the bench at the moment.

*  Testing of said adapter to be done by getting it up and running in the IIsi before jumping into the SE/30 time warp.

*  Finished modifying a Q700(?) PSU yesterday. Tested good last night, perches upside down on the IIsi FDD. :D

*  Tested RCPII/IIsii LB, snug in its bottom pan, powered monster PSU: all working well.

*  Moved new IIsi card test rig onto the base of the Snow White printer stand under the filing drawer of my main workstation.

*  Fired up awesome, handy, neat and tidy test lashup  .  .  .

.  .  .  GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8-o

IIsi seemed happy as a pig in poop at first, but I got no video signal out of two different RCPII/IIsi cards and it bombs 90 sec. after the nice bong.

It's back to the basics of troubleshooting the IIsi: first test evil Vampire Video and then swap in the supposedly good reserve MoBo.

Progress? Little bit  .  .  .  ::)

GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  > :(

This crap has been all over the place, no rhyme or reason to the problems I'm having this morning or tonight. Moving the backup (working) mobo to the new spot under the desk worked out just as badly as with the first one. Maybe the AppleDesign attacked both of them? Gonna let 'em sit there and rot! When I get a chance, I'll order up sets of caps and see if one of the three IIsi boards comes out working properly.

Meanwhile I'm going to de-solder everything in sight!  :p

:O These little buggers are multiplying like Compact Macs in a closet. Was buttoning up the project and found a fourth IIsi mobo! I'll test it later on when I've gotten the desoldering mania under control and have whittled down the 1400 stack a bit more. At least this one popped its head up out of the jumble before I ordered one too few sets of caps!

Cool and calm, results yesterday point to cap failure, no leaks found and it's a bright new day! [:)] ]'>

Would it not be easier to make a simple passive extension adapter to angle it just right so the IIsi adapter fits?  Or is it matter of space?

It's covered. ;)

edit: it's covered and then some. I'm home on lunch hour and just finished tweaking fitment of said passive adapter (ROM SIMM was in the way) This is  a down and dirty feasibility study. The NuBus card is backwards (connector facing forward) but passive adapter, NuBus Adapter and a NIC are all happily sitting in the ZipMacPlus/30.

to be continued  .  .  .   in a while.

Its almost time to start a new thread on the Passive Adapter follies, but I'll a quick update here one last time.

First test results are in: I've got a dozen more connections to make but I ran the first of the planned IIsi tests on the precious SE/30 while all four IIsi boards await recaps. I modified a Radius Color Pivot II/IIsi to fit within the SE/30 chassis. Had to do testing w/o the CRT for fitment, so I set up one Classic Mac Video Signal ready KDS/Radius LCDs to run off the RCPII/IIsi and I now have 16" Mac resolution displaying the curious floppy and a moving mouse cursor. Next step will be getting a good FDD/Disk Tools 7.1 up and running. Then on to the HDD.

We're looking very good so far! [:)] ]'>

Back for lunch, all systems are go. FDD is in and the contraption booted into 7.1 Disk Tools. Gotta get one of the HDDs in there with theDeclROM spelunking and diagnostics tool suite and its back to finishing up the rest of the connections on the NuBus adapter adapter! [:D] ]'>

Dear Trash,

I have been following your progress on the SI NUBUS Adapter in stalled in the SE/30. I have such an Adapter board (S/N 820-0305 0) made by Apple in 1990. If I sent it to you could you adapt it to work in a SE/30? If so how much would it cost? Thank you for your time.
