Have you set up the ibook to connect with airport (instead of, say, ethernet or modem)? DHCP selected?

Before you give up, check the simple things: Is the card securely seated? Is the antenna connector actually plugged into the card? I've run into several cases where the connector was a bit loose. It looked ok, but wasn't.

Make sure that the Airport on/off option is set to on.

Reinstall the Airport software, just in case it got mangled somehow along the way.

question: what OS are you running? what about you d-link? is it set to work with 802.11b? or is is a/g only? A lot of times, a poorly configured router can cause it not to be picked up, mainly because someone sets it to support the faster speeds, and drop the slower 11b standard.
