got G4 iBook for the kiddo, it's a 933 and has OS 10.4 on it. works fine. just wondering if there is a speed hit if I were to upgrade to 10.5 and if so how big a hit? since 10.5 has better parental controls and runs a newer version of iTunes (don't know how much of an issue that'll be, but he does have an iPod shuffle(1st gen) and has asked for an iTunes gift card to buy his own music for his birthday)

I run 10.5 on the Powerbook G4(1.5Ghz) and 10.5 server on a G4 mini(1.42GHz)... runs fine on those IMO, just never tried it on a slower G4.

There really isn't much of a performance difference on 10.4/10.5, as long as you upgrade the RAM to max and consider putting a faster HD in.

If you feel up to it, replacing the HDD (even from the stock 4200 to another 4200) made a big difference in my iBook G4.

Although, it was a PITA to open it up. :p

figured out the crashing. parental controls, content filter. I have it 'off', but it still runs when the parental controls are turned on for a user. it's all supervised use of the computer so there is no issue of him viewing sites he's not allowed on.

But after a few more crashes it started blocking sites, or at least tenfourfox could not access any of his usual sites. turning the content filter 'on' seems to have fixed it. weird.

and I am writing this from the iBook, doing some system updates. Amazed there are some for 10.5 HA!
