Hello,

I recently (today) was able to secure 106 iBook G3 Clamshells. Obviously I can't keep all of them, so Id like to share the joy with everyone. In the upcoming months (or years) Ill probably list some of them on eBay and hold giveaways on 68kmla. Although I understand this site is meant for Pre G3 systems, who doesn't love a free iBook?? :)  Ill probably do something along the lines of the Free Mac Pluses that were listed years ago. If anybody has another cool way of giving them out, feel free to let me know below.

Thanks!

Say, how much will you be selling them for in ebay? I noticed they are going up in price and popularity.

That is really awesome that you were able to get those, and at not a bad price at all (I may have glanced at the listing to see if the location was anywhere close... it wasn't  :( ).  I like your idea of passing them along over time, that's really cool of you.

As to your question of ideas to give them out....

you could arrange with people who have massive collections in a garage to take a photo with just the door open, people have to guess how many systems are in there.  Closest three people win an iBook (kinda like the "guess how many m&ms are in the jar competitions).

Another idea is to have people donate to a charity (either through you or directly), to get an iBook.

I assume the few members that do the recapping for most people here already have one of these, but if they don't you could donate a few to them so they can begin to document capacitors used and points of failure ("FOR SCIENCE!!!").  We are probably about ~5 years out from where some of the earlier iBooks may be needing recaps (just a guess).

That's all I can think of at the moment, but if anything else I'll post additional comments.

Congrats on the awesome win over at the bay!  :)

I think both color schemes look amazing when cleaned up nicely.  I'd like to get one at some point.  Currently in progress on restoring a Mac Portable and going scsi2sd in all applicable machines I have.  Vintage computer budget is tied up.  Maybe after that.

I want more vintage Macs myself but right now I'm trying to find a Pentium 233/Pentium II 266 PC for playing old Windows 95/98 games. I really want a Packard Bell but they're so hard to find and so expensive when you do...

If any of them are running OS 8.6, could you grab the Mac OS ROM file and send it to me please? :)

I think I see one Indigo in there. If you ever decide to sell them for a reasonable price and/or give them away here, I'd be interested in that one.

Also, if you feel like parting any of them out, I have a Tangerine that could use a new LCD panel.

All of the machines are 300MHZ Original non Firewire iBooks. I will keep everyone up to date regarding parts avalability in the future

Awesome!! I love these Clamshells, I have two blue ones myself. Great find. I think the charity idea is a good one.

Yes it was. Plus I live in Lexington, MA, so I had to pull a few strings to get it up here. My goal is to have a fun (probably overwhelming) project and hopefully make a few bucks/ recoup my costs. Im the kinda guy who will get bored of a machine fairly quickly, so having 100 of them will give me a chance to really master the iBook as well as giving me a new task every time. A lot of people have expressed interested in the machines, so my hope is to sell each one for $50ish. Im sure if you waited long enough on eBay you could find one cheaper, but for convince factors, Im gonna keep a fixed price. Id like to also give back to the community and give a few away.

It looks like the biggest maintenance task will be accessing HDD.

First revision clam "toilet seat" iBook interests me, as it is among very last models (along with Sawtooth G4) to run Mac OS 8.6. I opine, the two newer models are not as interesting. Additionally, libera operating systems can use most-all of its hardware without any firmware binary blob: later iBook have Rage 128, which needs a non-free blob for graphics acceleration. I might be only person here who cares about that.

belgaonkar, did you think about getting a bulk lot of power supplies?

Sounds like a perfectly fine plan to me.  I'll probably be interested enough to pick one up, I traded away my tangerine iBook a few years ago, wouldn't mind picking another one up.
