Got an old Newton Message Pad 110

I've got an old Newton Message Pad 110. Model# H0059.

I don't have any of the cable that go with it. However, it did function when I originally got it.

Anyway, how would I go about connecting this thing to a B&W G3 with OS 9.x, and OSX 10.2.6?

I also have an old PowerMac 6500/250 that I can piece back together, which has AppleTalk ports.

I think a Xircom will be the solution here. Its just a small device that offers two serial ports and is hooked up to the USB port of Your G3. With this one You not only can use the Newton within OS 9 with all the fancy stuff from that time for the Newton but also within OS X conecting Your 110 to iCal, Mail and others (needs free additional software).

I once tried it with a G3 B&W and it worked like a charme, but I had a MP 2100 (and I'm not sure if it works with NOS 1.x devices within OS X). Maybe I will try it sometime.

So what You have to watch out for is that Griffin iMate and just an old serial cable for Macs. Both pop up from time to time at eBay's. I will have a look on what was the name for the OS X software.

P.P.S.: "Xircom" - I don`t know the regular product name anymore, will have to dig it out. Please note that Griffin´s iMate just provides an ADB port and not a serial. There once were several solutions out there to connect a Newton (mostly 2100 and eMates) to "New World Macs".

You need the special dongle that came with the Newton originally (if this is the same setup as the 2000) without it , no chance.

The early Newtons did not need a special dongle, just a regular mini din9 or whatever serial cable(like ones the back of your Macs)

With my OMP and old 68k machines I was connecting the Newton to the "modem" port because I was already using the "printer" and ethernet ports for networking. I cannot recall having any issues aside from a bad cable I encountered once.

To be quite honest I personally would just use the 6500 and not bother with USB adapters and software in OS X that, IIRC, does not truly fully support communication with NOS 1.x.

I agree with MacJunky - the MP110 doesn't need a dongle - just connect using a standard Mac printer cable into whatever port on the Mac you are not using already (printer/modem).

Now I've just got to find my Appletalk/Printer cable.

So this will work on a USB Mac with a dongle, and OS X can be made to work as well. I like the sound of that. Cool Beans.

Very few of the USB to serial cables support Appletalk.
