• Updated 2023-07-12: Hello, Guest! Welcome back, and be sure to check out this follow-up post about our outage a week or so ago.

Got A 7200/120 What Now?

Got it for the amazingly low price of $15 with the AppleVision 1710 Monitor (DOA). But the system works.

Specs:

120 mHz 601

64 MB DIMM 168pin

1.2gb HD

8x CD ROM

1mb VRAM (BOO!)

Running 7.6.1

Internet works on it nicely (Netscape 4.something)

The next questions is, what should I do with it? Run 8? Run 9? Keep it a Sys 7 machine? (Have a Q605 with 7.6.1 and a LC with 6.0. 8)

And any thoughts on the monitor? ALSO, what problems are typical in this type of system? I have not seen much on this model so I am not sure what to expect... :-/

My Dad had a 7200. A powerful (in its day) and stable machine. The only time it had trouble was when using the Sonnet G4 upgrade card, driver issues. Anyway, he mostly ran 8 and then 9 on it.

Applevision 1710 monitors are notorious for failure so probably best to find it a home in a bin somewhere, sadly. I'd increase the RAM a bit, and keep both 7.6.1 and 8.1 on it to run some more PPC apps. You could try OS 8.6 with 128+ MB RAM, but the slow 601 CPU won't help things :)

However, good score!

I am looking at bumping it to 128mb, but even dimm's are pricey. Probably bump the VRAM up to 4mb. Using a 14" magnavox monitor on it now, seems to run smoothly. Pulled a few apps off mac garden and so far so good. Need to find a serial cable and tie it into my Q605. And get a new PRAM battery!

I love my PM7200/120, although technically it is an 8200/120. Same computer different case.I recently started to upgrade mine. I adore the case design, but I hate how hard it is to take apart and how brittle the plastic is of both the 7200 and 8200 . Mine is the same configuration as yours except for the hd (currently 80 mb! but I have a 9,2 gig underway). I also installed a jaz drive (gotta love these the best way for cheap scsi storage) and PC compatibility card, but I have no installed the software yet.

I there an easy way to obtain those vram megs or were they only made by Apple?

Quantity maybe... Quality no...

Mine has been unreliable as heck. I can't even get it to succeed on a 100MB write. I'm currently switching everything over to ZIP 100. I even went so far as to get a ZIP drive for one of my units on the x86 side of the playground. (I love how inspiron parts are 1/4 the price of Latitude parts as long as you know the compatible units. i.e. My Lat c810 goes to Inspirion 4400 compatible expansion bays. Also, Ubuntu has wonderful built-in support for ZIP 100s, even in HFS.)

Get a Sonnet Crescendo 7200 for $30 new, install some RAM, run OS 8.6.
If you decide to get a Sonnet upgrade, go through Sonnet's link for the CPU/Upgrade cards, not through their "Special Deals" link. The former prices the 7200 upgrade at $30. The latter leads to a $60 price.

Same for their remaining NuBus upgrades....
