Downloaded programs won't work on Classic?

Hey guys.. I joined here because I just recently bought a Mac Classic. Got it for a steal. Found it on eBay for $15, and since it was local, I didn't have to pay for shipping.

It was listed as working, which it does work. But the sound wasn't working, so I pulled it apart. Of course, I found the typical leaking capacitors on the logic board. So the board is being sent off to someone I know so they can replace the caps for me as I've never replaced surface mount caps.

Anyways... I found some abandonware online that will work on the Classic. I downloaded them on my Lombard Powerbook, and copied them to a floppy disk. Put the disk in the Classic..... programs show up on the disk, but they don't work. Gives an error I can't remember, but none of the programs work. What am I doing wrong?

What programs are they?

PPC programs won't work on a 68K, "FAT" binaries can work both ways, while 68k applications can run on a PPC (emulation).

Some programs are binhexed or packed in MacBinary formats to protect them against data corruption. Or archived in archives which can't be opened on a Classic because the archiver application can't open them (eg Stuffit Expander 3.5 won't open Stuffit X archives (.sitx)) or for other reasons.

Could you give us the error it returns?

EDIT: More details: System version of the Classic with the issue is?

You may want to pursue networking the two computers. There's a sticky thread at the top of the Compact Mac section that will tell you how to do that. You'll need a LocalTalk to Ethernet adaptor. Networking > floppies.

Okay.

That's System 6. I don't know if SuperPaint 2.0 runs under System 6 but I'm powerfully sure it does. I don't have my SE/30 with me to verify this.

Secondly: Zip files don't always handle resource forks correctly. Mac files since System 1.0 (no idea how the OS X changes that, other than .app which are explorable content "packages") have a resource fork (ResEdit opens these) and a data fork. PCs only have a data "fork" (they don't have forks...)

Try this instead.

If you use archives a lot between your Macs, Compact Pro gives good results.

EDIT: To change the creater/type use on the Lombard.

They are already on the Classic, and it won't let me change any of them. They show up as documents, and not applications. Plus right now I am trying to use my PC as my Lombard is at my friend's house.

That is because either the type/creator is messed up or the resource fork is corrupted. Use the PoweBook G3 to fix it - PCs can't recognize resource forks so they often will just strip them off.

Do you have SSW 7.0.1 or higher on the Classic? I'd just have that and 6.0.8.

The Classic just has 6.0.8 on it. I'm not sure if I want 7.0.1 on it because I heard it slows them down quite a bit. If not, maybe I'll install it. The RAM is also maxed out to 4MB. Sounds like I'll have to go get my Lombard and download the creator changer and try again.

It will affect the performance, but some apps are minimum 7.0.1 or later - just having a minimum install is good to have.

Use System 6 Heaven (google it) to fritz up your SSW 6 install. If you want better, a IIci could be a nice compliment to the Classic.

You could install system picker then you can choose between 6.0.8 or system 7. Also install stuffit on it and unstuff the packages on your classic instead of lombard or pc. This often helps me
