detecting caches/etc?

sorry if this has been covered before, I was wondering if basically one has to install the corresponding sonnet software to be able to recheck a sonnet cache card etc or can some tools actually make a generic probe of the hardware as startup post saw it?

thanks for letting me know what I might have to get into when my computer eventually shows up and I start testing the physically-compatible caches/rams I have lying around by then etc

Sonnet cards should have the software installed first before everything will work properly, as far as I know.

Metronome utility will tell you the clock speed and cache amount etc.

I'm not sure if another utility will tell you what you need but I'm not sure you would get much without the Sonnet drivers installed, that is how I've always checked them.

Yup, Metronome will do it, and should be just a standalone program that isn't dependent on INITs—I've had it show what my on-board system is on my Macs. But like joshc said, most* Sonnet CPU upgrade requires the drivers for the upgrade to be completely operational, including accessing the backside cache on the upgrade.

::anecdotal experience::
I haven't tried all the Sonnet upgrades, but if it's anything like my PowerLogix G3, you definitely need drivers for normal operation. I would get intermittent driverless functionality, mostly crashes. Although, sometimes Sonnet upgrades don't need a driver/INIT—*maybe only the ZIF G3 can run without it, but it's been a while. My L2 G3 will boot just fine, but again you get weird performance quirks.

TL;DR
Run the latest driver installer, just to make sure you get everything you need for normal operation

thanks, I'll have to make a note to track down which downloads I'll have to sort out ahead of time before I can test things around
